I feel Burke’s stiff posture beneath me. Before he can utter another word, I cut in.

“It may not have been the way either of us wanted. But it was what we both craved.”

Marco, the damn ghost we are talking to, nods with a smile before disappearing again. I take a moment to breathe, to think through everything that has happened tonight. Turning on his lap, I face him, staring into his eyes.

“Do regret it?”

“Not for a single fucking second. Marco really did do me a favor,” Burke says before locking his lips to mine.”

Epilogue

Exactly One Year Later

Halloween is still my favorite day of the year.

This year is different though. Instead of getting dressed up to go to a party I know I won’t enjoy, I drive my little powder blue car to the outskirts of town before turning onto a backroad. I drive for ten minutes before pulling over and killing the engine.

Removing my cellphone from my purse, I pull up the number I am looking for and hit dial. I listen to the ringing, waiting for a voice to say my name.

“Sweetness.” Burkes voice drifts down the line, sending anticipation skittering down my spine.

“Do you still track my phone?” I ask, fighting to keep the excitement from my tone.

“Sage, what’s wrong?”

I can hear him moving around in the background. I must take too long to answer.

“Sage, answer me,” he says worriedly.

“I’m fine.”

“Why do I need to track your phone?” His voice is a little calmer.

“I want to recreate our first date.”

In the year we have been together, we have never tried to recreate that night. We’ve spoken about it but our sex life has become a lot less… adventurous.

“Sweetness?”

“It’s our one-year anniversary.”

He chuckles and I feel the sound all the way to my soul. “Where are you?”

“I’m not telling,” I say with a smile. “But if you find me, you can have your way with me.”

I end the call without letting him say anything else. Isilence the ringer and stare out at the forest as the sun sinks below the horizon. Burke will be here soon.

I check my hair and makeup one last time before stepping out of the car. I walk into the tree line, calmness seeping into my soul. This is different from the last time but I know what to expect now.

I hear a siren in the distance and I know that he has broken laws to get here as quickly as possible. I laugh loudly at the thought of him speeding through our quiet little town with his lights flashing.

My steeps speed up as the noise grows closer. I need to be deeper into the woods before his car stops. I don’t want to make this too easy on him. It’s why I’m dressed in black tonight. The white dress I wore last year was like a damn shining beacon in the night. I hope my clothes will hide me a bit this time.

“Sage!” he yells loudly. “This isn’t funny.”

I clamp a hand over my mouth to stifle a giggle. Because to me, it is funny. I’m not in any kind of danger and he knows it.

“If I have to chase you, you’ll regret it,” he shouts.
