“Well, we went to bed later than usual last night. On account of our post-dinner activities.” I lock eyes with her, a soft pink blush spreading over her cheeks, and she’s even more beautiful today than yesterday.

“Oh yeah, right.”

“You still okay with everything?” I hold my breath, wait for her answer.

She bends down to unpack the paint supplies, her face turned away from me. The swish-swish of the stain as she shakes the can echoes off the bare walls, my heart thudding hard.

“Yeah. Are you?” Her eyes flick to mine, a tiny furrow line etched between her brows.

“Absolutely. I just wanted to check and make sure you’re still good with the arrangement. I don’t want you to feel like I’m pushing you into something.”

“Oh, I don’t.” She licks at her bottom lip and my muscles relax. She’s still into it, into us.

“Okay, good.”

An awkward tension creeps in between us and I debate telling her I overheard the conversation with Danny. Maybe it would be better to clear the air and be straightforward about everything.

“Yoo-hoo! Trixie!” Ana bustles in the front door carrying a cardboard pizza box. “I brought lunch. Figured it’s the least I could do while you’re working so hard over here. Oh hi, Colt.” She waves at me, flashing her brightest smile and I tip my head.

“Hey, Ana. Thanks for bringing lunch by. That was thoughtful of you.”

“Oh, no big deal. I picked it up while I was out running errands.” Ana slides up next to us, inserting herself into the small space between me and Trix. “You guys hungry now? I could fix you a plate.” She gazes directly at me, batting her lashes, and Trix bristles.

“Actually, Ana, we were just getting ready to stain the beams.” Trix pushes her shoulders back and juts out her chest.

“Oh. But maybe you should eat before you get started. That sounds like a massive project. You don’t want to be hungry while you’re working, right?” Her hand darts out, stroking my forearm, and Trix presses her lips together so tight they turn white.

Is Trix jealous?

“What do you think, Colt?” Ana asks, her voice breathy.

“Trix is the boss,” I say smoothly, and Trix’s mouth relaxes, the corners of her lips almost tipping up into a smile.

“Thanks for the pizza, Ana. We really appreciate it.” Trix takes the box from her sister-in-law and carries it over to the pile of furniture stacked in the corner, resting it on a table. “I’m sure it’ll be great.”

Ana’s face falls, her shoulders slumping. “Okay. Well, if you need anything else, don’t hesitate to call. You have my number, right?” She directs the question solely at me and Trix rolls her eyes behind Ana’s back.

I stifle a chuckle, acting all serious. “Yeah, of course. Thanks again for the pizza. Tell Danny I’ll catch him at the gym later this week.”

“Oh, I will. You need to get him back in shape, Colt. I’ll hold you to it!” She runs her hand over my pec in a very friendly way and Trix glowers at her.

“Colt—you ready?” Trix tips her head at the ladder and Ana takes the hint, backing toward the door.

“See you later. Be careful on that ladder, Colt!” She shoots me one more wave and then disappears through the door.

“Ohmygod, could she be any more obvious?” Trix scowls out the window at her sister-in-law’s back. “That’s downright embarrassing, how she’s throwing herself at you.”

“What are you talking about, Trix? She’s being friendly is all.”

“No, Colt. That iswaymore than friendly. Has she always been like that? If she cheats on my brother, I’m gonna kill her.”

“Trix, I would never do anything with Ana. She’s your brother’s wife.”

“I know, but?—”

I cup her face, tipping her chin up toward me. “Besides, I’m not interested in her.”

Trix’s breath catches and she swallows hard, her blue eyes wide as she gazes up at me.
