Trixie’s gone when I wake up. Her citrusy scent’s all over me, the pillows and the sheets, and everything that happened last night comes crashing back.

Fucking her bare in the shop, then eating her delicious pussy right here in the bed, lapping at her as she sat on my face. She was so receptive, taking everything I had to give. And she’s a screamer.

I fucking love that.

My cock’s at attention thinking about her and her luscious body. I hop out of bed and throw on clothes, then take a quick leak and brush my teeth. I should head downstairs and see what the plan is for the day. The sooner we wrap up work, the sooner we can get to the good stuff.

Taking the stairs two at a time, I’m on the last step when I hear a familiar voice muffled through the door.

Danny. He’s in the shop. I freeze, inching closer to the door so I can better make out his words.

“All I’m saying is be careful. I love Colt to death, but he’s not good with women. He loves ‘em and leaves ‘em. I’d hate to see you get hurt again.” His tone is serious, issuing a warning.

“Heard, loud and clear. But don’t worry about me. I’m a big girl and can take care of myself. Things between me and Colt are casual. He’s leaving to go back to L.A. anyway. Nothing serious is happening between us.” Trix sounds calm and matter-of-fact.

My chest constricts as I digest her words.Casual, nothing serious happening between us.

That was our deal. So why do I feel crummy hearing her say the words out loud?

Danny speaks again.

“Good. He’s a great guy, but he’s not boyfriend material and he’s certainly not husband material.”

Gee, thanks, Danny. Real ringing endorsement there.

Not that he’s wrong, but it still stings to hear your best friend since grade school throw you under the bus like that.

“Duly noted. Is that the end of your TED talk? Because I was kinda on my way out.”

“Yeah, that’s it.”

The voices fade until I can no longer hear them and then everything goes quiet. I’m pretty sure both of them left the shop and now I’m alone. I sink down on the stairs, a dull ache in my chest.

Danny knows about me and Trix. Worse, he doesn’t trust me with his sister. He doesn’t think I’m good enough for her—and he’s probably right.

Historically, I don’t do relationships. Keeping things casual is my M.O.

Until now.

Because if I’m being totally honest with myself, I like Trix. Really, really like her. She’s smart and funny and ambitious. Sexy and a damn good fuck.

Perfect for me.

The kind of girl I could fall in love with.

I haven’t felt this calm, this settled, in as long as I can remember. I’ve always been seeking the next thrill, the next adventure. But being here with Trix, I don’t feel the need to go out and search any more.

I could have everything I need right here and it’s scary and amazing all at the same time.

But it sounds like she doesn’t feel the same way. I heard her words. In her mind, things between us are casual, no-strings-attached, just sex.

I should keep my end of the bargain and leave as soon as the dedication’s over. The sooner I get out of Peach Springs, the easier it will be for all involved. My friendship with Danny can be salvaged—and I’ll save Trix from the disaster scenario that is me, Colt Wild.

The wildest of the Wilds.

My cell buzzes in my pocket, vibrating the entire stair.

I glance down, reading the message. It’s my agent, Stu.
