“It’s settled then. I can design the logo and then have the sign made.”

“Seems like everything’s coming together for you.”

“If the materials don’t take forever. How long do you think it takes to get tile in?”

“Depends. Two to three weeks, probably. Same with lighting, as long as you don’t pick something that’s out of stock.”

“Right…” I hop up, grabbing my laptop from my satchel and powering it on.

“What are you doing?” Colt leans forward, watching as I type.

“I had an idea for the logo. Hang on—” Using my design software, I sketch out the idea on the screen. “Do you like the light blue or light green better?”

I tilt the screen in Colt’s direction and he squints at the laptop. “I don’t know.”

Standing, he slides his chair across the floor, sets it next to mine. Now we’re shoulder-to-shoulder, his strong thigh brushing against my bare one. A bolt of desire shoots through me, my skin flushing as his fresh eucalyptus scent winds around me.

“Make the blue darker.” He points at the color display and I move the mouse to the shade of blue he suggests, making the change.

“Oh, I love it!” I clap, giddy excitement bubbling through me at the newly designed logo. “Thanks, Colt. That’s brilliant.”

He smiles, that dimple in his cheek tempting me to lean over and caress his skin, feel the stubble tickle my fingertips. Brush my lips against his and taste him for the first time. His mouth parts, his tongue running along the seam of his bottom lip, and every inch of me aches to make contact.

Buzz, buzz.

My cell vibrates on the table, rattling the dishes and breaking the spell. I reach for the phone, breathless.

Danny: Hey—you ok? Haven’t heard anything from you. You have somewhere to stay?

“It’s my brother.” I palm the metal, my heart pounding.

Why do I feel like I just got caught misbehaving?

Trixie: Yes, I’m fine. And I’m renting an apartment, all good

There, not a lie. I am renting an apartment, that’s one hundred percent true. He never asked if I was alone.

Danny: Cool. You need anything?

Trixie: No, all good

Danny: Awesome. Dinner tomorrow?

Inexplicably, my heart sinks. Which is stupid because I literally have no plans for tomorrow night or the day after that, or the one after that.

Trixie: Sure. Need me to bring anything?

Danny: No, just yourself. See you tomorrow, little sis

I scowl down at the cell, hating how he still calls me that. The man’s thirty-three years old and still as aggravating as a five-year-old.

“Everything good?” Colt asks, a hint of worry in his voice.

Smoothing my hand down over my shirt, I nod. “Yeah, fine. He was making sure I’m good.”

Colt’s arm brushes against mine, sending sparks flying over my skin. Our fingers touch and I glance up, my breath hitching. His pupils dark and wide, he’s taking me in, the overhead light shining down and highlighting his high cheekbones.

“And are you? Good?”
