And where did this leave me and Macy?

Macy.

What was I supposed to say to her?Oh hey, so I slept with this girl from my app the one time I used it about eight months ago and now she’s apparently having my baby?

Ugh. I ran a hand through my still-damp hair, took a deep breath as I walked back to the house, trying to regroup.

I didn’t have long.

Macy stood in the doorway, arms crossed, looking upset but still sexy as hell.

Shit.

“Is it true?” she asked, her arms crossed over her chest.

“I don’t know,” I said in a quiet voice, shoving one hand in my pocket. My fingers itched to touch her, to reach out, but I intuitively sensed she wouldn’t be open to the contact.

“What do you mean, you don’t know? Did you sleep with her, Liam?”

I stared beyond her, at a photograph hanging on the wall, a gigantic wave breaking and spraying up whitewater.

“Yes,” I mumbled. “But it was one time, a long time ago. Swear.”

“Looked to be about eight, eight and a half months, by my calculations,” she said, her eyes narrowed.

I hated the look of pain on her face. Hated even more that my actions had put that look there.

“I suppose I can’t hold it against you, seeing as how I didn’t even know you yet,” she said, screwing her mouth up, one brow arched high.

I relaxed a little, my chest opening up a touch.

“But what now? What does this mean for us?” She waved her hands between us, in the space separating our bodies.

“Mace, this is as much of a surprise to me as it is to you, believe me. I literally went on three dates with Aria and we slept together one fucking time.”

“Sometimes that’s all it takes, Liam,” she spat out, her voice hard.

“Yeah, I understand that. And if the kid’s mine, I will one hundred percent support it.”

“Support it? What do you mean? You’re going to just throw money at the situation? And leave Aria with the baby on her own, struggling?” She bit down hard on her lip, all the pink draining out of it.

“Maybe? I don’t know. I don’t really want to raise a kid with a woman I barely know.”

“I understand that, but what about the child, Liam? That could be your baby!”

“I need a minute to process this, Mace. That’s all I’m asking for. Aria and I hardly even know each other.”

Macy’s eyes filled with tears. “I need to go. You have a lot of things to handle here; you don’t need another complication in your life.”

With that, she swiveled and headed towards the stairs.

“Macy! Wait!” I reached out for her, grabbing her arm.

She turned, peering at me over her shoulder. “I need to go home. This is all—” she waved her arms around—at the ocean, the house, me— “it’s too much. I don’t need complications. I shouldn’t have come here.” She glanced back at me, meeting my gaze, her hazel eyes filling with tears. “Your life is here, Liam, and I don’t fit into it.”

She paused for one long second, and time hung suspended between us, the waves crashing against the shore in the distance. Then she turned and ran up the stairs, leaving me all alone.
