Reaching up, I wrapped my hand around his neck as he rested one hand on my waist, lacing his fingers in my other.

“That was a lovely speech,” I said, gazing up into his clear blue eyes, glimmering in the twinkly lights.

“Thanks. I didn’t get a chance to practice.” He spun me around, in perfect time to the music.

“I didn’t know you were a professional dancer,” I teased.

“Embarrassingly, my mother made me attend etiquette classes. We had to learn a lot of irrelevant things. At least, it felt that way at the time. All I wanted to do was play video games and hang out with my friends. Instead, I learned the foxtrot, the waltz, and the proper table settings.”

“It seems to have served you well.”

Liam released one hand, spinning me out, then back in again.

“Every once in a while it comes in handy, yes.” He grinned, his hand splaying wide across my hip, his fingers brushing my rear. Even that slight bit of contact caused a hot flush to rise all the way from my core to my chest. I leaned in closer to Liam, breathing in his scent, his goodness.

“I meant what I said in the speech, you know.” He thumbed my cheek, his touch lighting me up. “I want to have a family one day. I think we’d be good together.”

My breathing stopped, my pulse hammering hard in my neck. I willed my feet to keep moving, even though it felt like time was standing still.

“I love you, Macy.”

All the air whooshed out of my chest, the courtyard suddenly spinning around me.

I was, quite literally, speechless.

“Not the reaction I was hoping for,” Liam said in a wry voice, staring down at me.

“Sorry—it’s just—I’m surprised is all.”

“Good surprised? Or bad surprised?” he asked, one brow raised.

“Good surprised,” I said, reassuring him. “And I feel the same way...”

My voice trailed off and for the first time all night, Liam faltered, thrown off his game a little.

“But—” he said, his tone low.

“This has all been really—fast.”

“Lightning strikes are like that.” He brushed a loose lock of hair from my eyes, sending another bolt of electricity racing through me.

Damn, maybe he was on to something.

“I get it. You have trust issues. I think we covered that. A few times actually,” he joked, rebounding.

I laughed, my chest opening up to where I could at least breathe again. “Don’t give up on me, Liam,” I whispered, leaning against his strong chest, his heart pounding through his shirt.

“I won’t, Mace,” he said, dropping a kiss on my hair. “Promise.”

MACY

The rest of the gala passed by in a blur of dancing, drinking, and laughing with Liam’s friends. Benji, Gabe, and Jillian were a blast to hang out with and the night couldn’t have gone any better. We stayed at the gala until the lights came up, then the driver sped us back home to Malibu.

By the time he dropped us back off at the house, it was well past midnight.

Liam unlocked the door, letting us into the darkened space. The only light in the room was the soft glow of moonlight reflecting off the dark water down below.
