How did I get here? Could this really be my future?Private jets, galas, impromptu vacations.None of these things existed for me a few weeks ago, and now here Liam sat, dangling a new life in front of me, promising me the world.

I felt breathless, weightless. And, deep-down, a teeny-tiny bit afraid.

Damn you, Madame Scarlet.

“You can’t keep this up,” I said, my voice low so the flight attendant wouldn’t overhear our conversation. Even though she was discreet, I was still hyper-aware of her presence.

“Oh, I can, and I will. And more.” Liam’s deep blue eyes glittered with the challenge and my stomach flip-flopped, knowing he probably actually could.

“I can’t accept all this.” I gestured at the plush leather seats, the blue skies outside the window, the sparkly golden flutes of champagne.

“Yes, you can. Even more—you should.”

My heart squeezed hard in my chest at the sincerity in his voice, the tenderness in the touch of his palm on my leg.

“Let me give you everything you deserve, Mace.” He leaned over, kissing me softly, his tongue sliding over my lips. His mouth tasted like champagne and more than anything, I wanted to savor him and our time together.

Just in case it didn’t last.

I kissed him back, hard and deep, melting into him. His hand found my face, cupping my cheek, his thumb tracing the outline of my jaw.

“Should I tell the flight attendant to get lost?” Liam murmured into my open mouth, his other hand moving high up my thigh.

“What? No!” I said, pulling away.

He shot me a mischievous look. “I could. If you want...” He winked and I punched him lightly in the arm.

“Liam McCauliffe. You’re a bad boy. I didn’t know you had it in you.”

“Oh, underneath this boyish charm, I can be quite cunning.”

“Sure, right. You’re flying cross-country to attend a charity event,” I pointed out.

“True. I never said I was a grade-A asshole. I try to give back.”

“I doubt anyone’s ever called you an asshole,” I said, reflecting on all the things Liam had done for me in the short time I’d known him. Beginning with rescuing me in a parking lot and fixing my car.

“You’d be surprised.” He shrugged, his brows arched. “But it’s business. Never personal.”

“Good to know,” I said, taking a sip of my drink. “Tell me more about this fundraiser.” I’d been so caught up in the logistics of this weekend, I hadn’t really delved into the details. “How many people will be there?”

“Probably around a thousand. We’re raising money for heart disease research; ever since my dad died, I’ve wanted to help prevent as many deaths as possible. You know, without being a doctor.”

“I’m sorry,” I said, squeezing his hand tight.

Liam shot me a sad smile. “It’s okay. This fundraiser supports research into the causes of heart disease. And now that I have the money...” His voice trailed off as he peered out the window.

“I’m sure you’ve already helped a lot of people, Liam,” I said, wishing I could erase the pain on his face.

He sighed. “I could do more.”

“We could all do more.”

He smiled at me, warmth in his eyes. “Thanks, Macy. And thanks for coming with me.”

“Happy to be here.”

“Sir, we’re getting ready to start our descent.” The flight attendant materialized once again, collecting our empty plates and glasses, and reminding us to raise our seat backs for landing.
