“Movement, general movement. Water. Fog. I can’t see any more, I’m sorry. I’ve lost my vision.”

“Huh,” Everly said, chewing her bottom lip, clearly disappointed. “Okay, thanks.”

Madame Scarlet patted Everly’s hands and smiled, then broke away from my sister and waved to me. “Come on, come here.” She gestured me over and Everly and I switched spots.

Now I was in the hot seat and my heart started racing. Which was dumb, because I knew this was all a bunch of BS.

Madame Scarlet covered my hands with hers, which were surprisingly warm. Up close, I realized the humming was more of a chant—visions come to me, the seeker—or something like that. Her lips moved rapidly, the pitch growing higher each time. The table vibrated beneath my hands and Madame Scarlet started shaking side to side again.

I held my breath, my stomach churning as I waited to hear my fate.

All of a sudden, Madame Scarlet stilled. Unlike with Everly, she opened her eyes very slowly, then they rolled back in her head, revealing the whites.

Ugh, nasty.I tried to erase that thought from my mind—I didn’t want to taint my reading.

Madame Scarlet’s eyes righted again, and she locked her narrowed gaze on mine; she vaguely resembled a snake, her eyes tiny slits now.

“Well?” I asked, squirming a little in my seat.

She stared at me for a moment, then shook her head.

Shit. What did that mean?

“My darling, I see sunshine and rainbows. All good things.”

“Super,” I said, exhaling. “That’s good, right?”

“Mmm, very. But then—” She shook her head sadly, dropping her chin to her chest.

Geesh. Did someone die?

“What?” I asked, suddenly hooked in. Ineededto know what she saw, even if it was terrible.

“Tell me. Please,” I begged.

She patted my hand. “Remember—this is only a reading. You can change your fate.”

WTF? How bad was this?

“Tell me!” I demanded, my voice rising as acid burned my throat.

“I saw an earthquake, lots of grey. There’s a large, wide chasm. And a narrow wooden bridge.”

“Oh-kay...” I said, my knee bouncing up and down beneath the table. “And what does any of that mean?”

“Open to interpretation,” Madame Scarlet explained.

Super fucking helpful.

“Well, interpret it, then,” I said, anger creeping into my voice. I leaned forward, urging her on.

She closed her eyes again, rubbing all the way up—from my hands, to my forearms, to my elbows. My hair stood on end, my skin warm with static electricity caused by the friction. Now I was officially freaked out, a huge, gnawing pit of worry seeded in my stomach.

I glanced over at Everly; she was on the edge of her seat, leaning forward and biting her nails like a possessed beaver. Great, even my sister was freaking out.

Then Madame Scarlet went perfectly still, the only sound in the room our exhales and the eerie background music. I felt flushed and was having trouble catching my breath.

Finally, she opened her eyes and stared straight at me, her dark eyes wide, yet distant. Almost as if she weren’t looking at me, but beyond me.
