“I’ll write it all down for you, promise. You’ll get the hang of it. There aren’tthatmany players,” Macy assured me as we shuffled forward in the line.

“You just threw out like thirteen people. Itisthat complicated, apparently.”

“Keep hanging out at the diner and the Rowdy and you’ll have everyone down in no time.”

“Tickets.” A high school-aged kid held out his hand, waiting for me to deposit the small blue rectangles. I counted four tickets off, handing them over, and Macy and I walked down the metal ramp.

“You ready for the wildest ride Peachtree Grove has to offer?” Macy asked, settling into the metal bucket seat of the Ferris wheel.

“Absolutely,” I said, stretching my arm out behind her, placing my hand on her slim shoulder. She nestled in close to me, resting her head on my arm, and I inhaled, the sweet scent of peaches and Macy swirling around me.

“Macy—” I said.

The wheel lurched forward, and we fell back hard against the metal seat, Macy’s melodic laugh ringing out.

“Oh my, I forgot how jerky this was,” she said, gripping my thigh hard as we rose even higher into the air.

All of a sudden, we took off, rising high above the Earth at a fairly decent clip. My stomach lurched, then dropped as the ground grew farther away, the people down below becoming tiny specks.

Okay, so I’d lied. I was a teeny-tiny bit afraid of heights. I swiped my hands down my jeans, attempting to dry them.

“Isn’t this amazing?” Macy asked, her cheeks flushed, eyes bright with elation.

“Yes,” I whispered, my eyes trained only on her. Honestly, she was the only thing I wanted to look at anyway.

She threw her head back, her face to the sky, and I drank her in—her enthusiasm, her excitement, her pure, uncomplicated joy in that moment.

“Come to California with me,” I stammered, my mouth dry and my nerves twitching.

“What? When?” Macy jerked her face back upright, staring at me with wide eyes.

“Next weekend. I have to go back for a fundraiser. My fundraiser, actually, and it’s kind of a big to-do. And I want you there. Beside me.”

Seriously, Liam? Way to play it cool.

“I don’t know—” she said, her voice suddenly small, timid.

“I’ll take care of everything. I just need you there. With me. Please.” I cupped her face in my hands, hardly able to breathe until she said yes.

“Are you sure? It’s a lot. I need a plane ticket, something to wear...” She ticked off all the practicalities and I waved them away.

“Mace. I’ve got it. All you need to do is show up. Swear. I’ll have my assistant pick up something for you to wear, I’ll take care of the flights—all you need to do is come with me and enjoy yourself.” I stared deep into her eyes, willing her to say yes.

“Really? It seems like an awful lot.”

“It’s not. I’ve got this—I’ve got you,” I said, reassuring her.

“Okay,” she breathed, her voice barely louder than an exhale.

“Okay?” I asked, our faces close, almost touching.

“Yes,” she whispered.

I didn’t say anything else, just leaned in and kissed her, long and hard, until both of us needed to break away to breathe.
