“He could use a friend, Mace. His cousins are busy with their own lives and he’s stuck being in charge of something that’s not even his. That’s gotta really suck. I thought you, of all people, would want to be a friend to him.”

I sank back into my chair, reflecting on what my sister just said. Annoyingly, she was right.

“I hadn’t thought of it that way,” I said in a small voice, biting the side of my lip.

“I don’t know about you sometimes,” Everly chided, shaking her head. She stood, patting my shoulder. “I have to grade a ton of papers. Want to help?”

Everly’d made me feel sufficiently shitty about myself, so I gave in to her request. “Fine. But you’re planning dinner. I’m exhausted.”

“Okay, deal. To be clear—we’re ordering pizza.”

I laughed. “That’s a plan I can get behind. C’mon, let’s crank these papers out.”

Two hours later,we’d graded all the spelling tests and Everly’s lesson plans were done for the week. Now she was stretched out on the couch, scrolling through her phone.

“Hey, have you looked up his app yet?” Everly asked, not taking her eyes off her phone screen.

“No. Have you?” I tucked one leg up under the other, glad she wasn’t into eye contact at the moment.

“I don’t even know what it’s called.”

“SwypeRight,” I said automatically, then grimaced inwardly. If I didn’t shut the hell up, my sister was going to start asking me a bunch of uncomfortable questions.

“Hmm, clever name. Oh, here it is.. .” Everly flashed her phone in my direction, then hit download.

“Ev, what are you doing?”

“Checking out the app, duh.”

“Why? What’s the point? Are you going to use it?” I levered up on my elbow, staring at her.

“Maybe. Probably not, but maybe.”

She tapped away on her phone, entering her personal info. “C’mon, let’s check it out.” She grabbed my elbow, pulling me over towards her. “Oh, he’s cute. Should I swipe?”

I shrugged. “I guess. But what does that even mean?”

“Gawd, Macy, you’re so old! It means you’re interested and if you both swipe, you can DM each other.”

“But why? What’s the point?”

“Um, so you don’t die alone?” Everly said, raising her eyebrows. “Not everyone is good with the amount of alone time you’ve become accustomed to.”

“Rude,” I said, glaring down at her.

“But true. When’s the last time you had a boyfriend? Like a real boyfriend—not just a random hook-up?”

I sat and thought about that for a moment, staring up at the ceiling. “Uh...I know—” I snapped my fingers. “Rafe. From the bar crawl.”

“That was like two years ago and y’all went on maybe three dates. Maybe. I don’t think that counts as a boyfriend.”

“Well, aren’t you picky?” I sat back, gnawing on my lip.

Damn, my sister had a point.I don’t think I’d had a boyfriend in as long as I could remember.

“Maybe you should use the app,” Everly said, elbowing me. “What do you think about this guy? He’s cute, right?” She pointed at the blond on the screen.
