Yes, I most definitely want dessert. But not one from the menu, I thought, eyeing Liam’s broad shoulders, his perfectly straight teeth.

Instead, I said, “I couldn’t possibly. I’m stuffed.”

“Just the check when you get a chance,” he told the waiter.

Two minutes later, we had the check. I reached for it, snatching it from the waiter.

“Macy, I’ve got it,” Liam said, reaching for the black plastic folio.

“No, that wasn’t the deal. Let me pay you back. Please.”

Liam sighed. “You really don’t have to.”

“Yeah, I do.” I opened the bill, sliding my credit card in, handing it back to the anxious waiter.

“It was more than $100. And that was our deal,” Liam said in a stern voice, his lips pressed together.

Not gonna lie, I kind of liked his bossy side.

“So was my battery,” I shot back. “Chevy came into the Rowdy and I gave him a hard time about his second-hand parts. He told me how much it cost. Even though you didn’t.” I stared across the table, straight into the pools of his eyes, heat now simmering between us.

Liam ran a hand through his hair, sighing. “I have the money. It’s no big deal.”

“I appreciate the gesture, but I’m used to taking care of myself.”

He nodded. “And I appreciate where you’re coming from. But sometimes it’s okay to let people help you.”

His words sent tingles straight from my neck all the way down to my toes, filling me up with a mixture of gratitude and appreciation. Even though we’d just met, I wanted this man. No, needed this man.

Now.

Maybe forever.

That whisper shocked me, and I licked my lips, suddenly as nervous as I’d been at the beginning of the date. I broke eye contact, scrawling my signature on the bill. I’d have to borrow a few bucks from Everly, but at the moment it seemed worth it.

“Ready to get out of here?” I asked, collecting my card and tucking it into my clutch.

“Yes.”

Liam stood, again helping me with my coat, his hand resting on my back as we walked out of the restaurant.

“Where to now?” he asked, holding the door for me.

“I’d invite you back to my place, but there’s a good chance Everly will be home. So unless you’re up for a game of Twenty Questions, we should go somewhere else.”

“You already nixed the Rowdy and the diner. It’s too cold to walk around town and most everything is closed already. So—my place?” He raised a dark brow at me, the soft glow of the moon highlighting his strong jawline with the exact right amount of facial hair. I wanted to feel that scruff on my skin, see where we might end up.

“That works for me,” I said, nodding, the butterfly brigade fluttering back into action. “As long as I’m home by midnight.”

“Why? You turn into a pumpkin?” Liam teased, revving the truck’s engine.

“Something like that,” I joked.

“I’ll do my best. But there could be traffic.” He winked at me and heat unfurled low in my belly.

Tread lightly, Macy, whispered a tiny, but annoying voice.Do not get in over your head.

For the first time in forever, I silenced that voice, following my heart instead.
