“So that puts you somewhere north of twenty-eight.”

“I’m in between Quinn and Ryder’s age.”

“Perfect,” I said, swallowing hard. “We’re about the same age then.”

“By Peachtree Grove standards, I’m an old maid.” She nodded at a customer down the bar, pouring bourbon into a glass.

“Well, in California you’re definitely not,” I said, reassuring her.

She blushed again, then walked down the bar to deliver the drink. A few seconds later, she was back, hands on her hips, her body squared to mine.

“Tell me, Liam, why is someone like you interested in someone like me? I doubt we have a thing in common.” She bit down on the side of her lip and my entire lower body tensed.

“I’ll bet we do,” I said, leaning on the bar, wanting to get closer to her. “You like sports?”

She shook her head, her blond hair brushing over her shoulders. “Nope.”

“See? Me neither. Suck at them, actually. Despite having a cousin who played in the NFL. Don’t really watch them, either.”

“I’m not good with computers,” Macy said over her shoulder as she made change for another customer down the bar.

“Funny story—I couldn’t even get the credit card reader to work at the store today, so I’m really questioning my abilities there.”

Macy laughed and my heart flip-flopped in my chest. I loved watching her smile, her face glowing.

“In my defense, I do think it’s the world’s original card reader,” I protested, putting both my hands up.

“Right, sure. Excuses, excuses,” she said, teasing, and my pants tightened at her tone, the way her lips quirked up at the corners. Like she was daring me to argue with her.

“Listen,” I said, swallowing hard over the lump in my throat. This was the part that always made me nervous. And the reason I actually created the app.“Do you ever have a day off?”

Macy flipped her hair back over her shoulder and my breath caught in my throat.

“Hardly. But I am off half the day tomorrow.”

“Morning half or evening half? Can I take you out?” I asked, straightening up, trying to appear more confident than I felt. Macy was hot, sexy, sassy—qualities that typically scared the shit out of me. But for some reason, I just couldn’t stop myself.

“Evening half. And seriously?” One of Macy’s blond brows shot up, her head cocked to the side.

“Yes, seriously. Why not?”

“We live on different coasts, for starters,” she pointed out, wiping down the bar again until it gleamed under the glow of the lights.

“But we’re here now. Together. Ish.”

“Why, Liam? What would be the point? You’re going to leave eventually. And I’m not.” She folded her arms over her chest, resigned to her fate.

“It’s one date, Macy. Dinner. We can cross the geography bridge when we come to it.”

She scrunched up her nose, thinking. “I don’t know...”

“C’mon. Please? Otherwise, I’m going to be the third wheel at Ryder and Bree’s. Or I’ll be eating alone in my kitchen.”

Macy chewed on her bottom lip for a moment, debating, while I stood there praying she couldn’t hear my thundering heartbeat.

“Fine. One dinner. And I’m buying. It can count towards my debt.”

I heaved out a sigh of relief, my chest opening back up. “If it makes you feel better. But I’m picking you up.” I winked at her and she laughed.
