M: Oh, sexy! Was he pissed?

D: Totally

M: Tell me you’d at least told him abt the bakery offer

D: Nope

M: DELANEY

D: I know, I know. I screwed up. But there wasn’t time. He came over late and one thing led to another and then we fell asleep

M: Uh-huh

D: What do I do now?

M: Um, spill the beans

D: I kind of already did

M: And what did he say?

D: That we’d talk about it today. I’m scared. I think he’s going to leave me

M: Maybe not.

D: Only MAYBE NOT?!?!? FUCK

M: Don’t panic yet. What are you going to say?

D: I don’t know. What’s there to say?

Three seconds later, my phone rang.

“It’s me,” Mars whispered.

“You’re on the phone. You don’t have to whisper,” I whispered back.

“True,” he said in his normal voice. I smiled, despite my predicament. Mars always made me laugh.

“Girl, what happened?”

“I already told you. Holden showed up in the middle of the freaking night. What was I supposed to do? Quinn answered the door and there he was.” I tucked my feet up under me.

“She-eit! That’s bad.”

“I know! Quinn was understandably upset. I think he feels like I’m keeping secrets from him. And I’d never mentioned Holden by name at all, so that was another shock.”

“Yikes.”

“Yeah. And of course Holden had to do the whole ‘We were great together’ act, which you know is total bullshit.”

“Total.”

“So what do I do? The bakery offer is a good one—a great one, actually, you saw the numbers—but I love Quinn. And now he might break up with me anyway...” My voice trailed off, hot tears welling in my eyes.Damn it, how had this all gone wrong?

“It’ll be okay, Lanie. Just be honest with Quinn. Like one-thousand percent honest. That’s definitely the secret sauce.”

“I have been!”
