The deep voice coming from behind us caught me off-guard and my body flushed.Guess Taylor wasn’t picking Hudson up.My emotions flip-flopped between excited and nervous about this turn of events.

“Hey, it’s no problem,” I said, turning and smiling at Grant. Today he wore a light blue dress shirt that perfectly matched his eyes and he looked hotter than ever.

Relax, Lana. Do not think about the kiss on the beach.

I glanced up and locked eyes with him and damn if all I could think about was kissing those perfect lips and making him forget all about whomever it was he thought about.

Shitterbacher.

“And I realize I’m probably not in great standing right now,” Grant scanned the pool deck, “since Huddy is the last kid here the day before a holiday and I’m sure you’re looking forward to your time off.” He shifted from foot to foot, shoved a hand in his pocket.

“It’s fine, you’re fine,” I assured him, smiling.

“Are you busy tomorrow?”

My breath caught in my throat. What should I say here? I mean, on the one hand, I’d love to get involved with him, he was hot as hell. But on the other, he had a kid and an ex and his life seemed complicated…

“Uh,” I stalled.

“Forget it, I’m sure you have plans.”

“No, I’m free. What’s up?” I asked, biting my lower lip.

Grant sighed. “The nanny bailed on me tomorrow—she apparently didn’t think I’d be working the Fourth of July—and I have a few important calls in the morning. Is there any way you could watch Hudson for a few hours? Just the morning, I swear. It’s okay if you can’t, I’ll bring him to the office with me and he can color or something. Never mind—it’s stupid. I shouldn’t have asked,” Grant rambled on. Hudson shot me a baleful look, his eyes huge and pleading.

Like I could say ‘no’ now.

“Sure, I can watch him. No problem,” I said, trying to hide my disappointment.

What did I think he was going to say? Hey, Lana, want to go out tonight? Have wild, crazy sex?The dude had akid! Colossally bad idea, even for me.

“Really? You could? I’d be so grateful. I’ll pay you twice what you make here…”

“Stop,” I said, waving him off. “It’s fine. Just text me your address. What time?”

“8:30 too early?” he asked, his dark brow furrowed.

“Nope. That works.”

“You’re a lifesaver, Lana. Thank you.” He smiled at me, then we stood there staring at each other in the still-hot sun, Hudson between us.

“No prob,” I said, breaking the tension. “Let me give you my number.”

Grant

Ihad no business asking Lana to babysit, especially on a holiday, but I was in a real bind.

At least, that’s what I told myself. And it was mostly true. Taylor really did bail on me, and I did have a critical call. Plus, I knew Hudson liked Lana and I could absolutely trust her, since she was already his swim instructor and a school teacher.

And also, I wanted to see her again, despite the shouting from my rational attorney brain about what a bad idea that was.

“Hey, thanks so much for watching Hudson for me,” I said, ushering Lana into the house. She breezed in, her blonde ponytail swishing behind her. She wore a navy-blue romper and leather sandals and smelled like summer, all coconut and sunshine. My body reacted to her presence, my pulse doubling, every muscle tensing.

I took a calming breath before starting the house tour. “This is the kitchen.” I motioned to the white marble island with three navy-and-white stools. “Hudson usually eats breakfast here. Help yourself to anything in the fridge.”

Lana nodded, following close behind me. “And here’s the family room.”

“Hi, Lana!” Hudson waved at Lana from the sofa, where he was watching cartoons.
