Alessio nods. “Or not.”

Bruno says, “We had no idea that you would want all three of us.”

“And we had no idea of letting you get away with that,” Carlo takes a sip of his coffee, “Or, at least, these two dinosaurs didn’t.”

Alessio looks like he wants to argue, but he lets it go. Instead, he says, “I think we all thought it was a kind of game, or something that would pass.”

“But,” Bruno squeezes my hand as he looks into my eyes, “We all underestimated you.”

“People do that,” Carlo’s eye gleam, “We thought, well, those two thought, that they were in charge and they could make you play by their rules.”

I’m getting a strong sense of a powerful woman. A woman who I would be in my fantasies. Can I really play her, can I be that woman? These three men seem to believe it, and whatever else they might be, they are not fools.

“When the Don exiled you,” Carlo says, “We all fought like dogs, blaming each other.”Exiled?

Bruno nods. “That’s when we really understood that, however much we were rivals, we all wanted you and we couldn’t give that up.”

“Was that hard?” I ask them, “Did it go against your expectations?”

“Oh,” Alessio says, “I’ll say that it did.”

The other two look at him, then at each other and their heads shake.

“When I got used to the idea,” Carlo says, “I was happy for us all to have a big, complicated, nuanced and dynamic relationship.”

“Three relationships,” Alessio says.

Carlo says, “Really, eight relationships. Each of us with you as a couple, every pair of us with you as a throuple or threesome, and all four of us together. Those can all be great relationships and I love them all.”

Hearing all this, I’m smiling to myself. “You make it sound wonderful.”

“I can’t get over it,” Carlo says, taking hold of my hand. “I’m so happy to have you back. I’m wondering,” he looks around the table. “I think all of us feel strongly enough about you that we would be ready to try and build all up again, even if we have to work it out from scratch.” he looks around. “But the choice is yours.”

Bruno says, “As always.”

Carlo tells me, “Despite the rocky starts we had, I really do love you and Bruno together. You’re such a great combination. A powerhouse of opposites. And you and Alessio are firecrackers together. Two strong, powerful wills. You’re in a constant power struggle, but it always seems to bring out the best in both of you.”

Bruno adds, “You and Carlo together, you’re like a supercomputer. You’re all the spy agencies and business brains, all rolled up together. You’re luminous. You’re really amazing.”

I have an idea. “There are things that I need to do, I know that, and I know that we all have some problems and issues that are pressing. Me not knowing or understanding any of that is a problem, I know.” I look around. “For all of us.”

I’m watching all three men. “But for right now, maybe we should stay on the boat tonight. Can we just be out on open water like this?”

“We should move around to a little bay where there’s cover and shelter,” Bruno says. “As it gets darker, a boat gets easier to spot because of the lights.”

“We couldn’t just leave all the lights off?”

Alessio’s dark chuckle rumbles. “Only if you want to meet the coast guards in their very blackest mood.”

Carlo nods. “They would assume we were smuggling something.”

“And a boat this big,” Bruno’s lips purse, “they would be spending months taking it apart to find out.”

I say, “So. A nice, small, isolated cove, then. Do you know anywhere like that?”

The plan is for us all to sleep in the master berth. It’s a suite that would look perfectly in place at a completely over the top five star resort hotel. The bed is immense and almost circular.

The carpet is gold. All of the throws and coverings are in luscious, extravagant gold satin. Quilted, cushioned, ruched and pleated. Gold drapes hang from floor to ceiling.
