“Your family?”

I looked down at the table. “Nobody.” I hadn’t even talked with Mom about it. She knew how long I’d been held, but not what had happened to me.

“It sounds like neither of you is being completely honest.”

I nodded. It was a situation I intended to change.

“I destroyed the tapes,” he said after a moment.

I gasped. I’d never known they’d been recording. I was grateful to Lucas all over again.

He shifted out of the booth and stood. “It won’t be easy, but if you’re willing to be completely honest, I think he’ll understand how strong you are.”

I nodded. But was I strong enough to unlock the chest and relive it?

“I’d say the next step is up to you.” He set a key on the table. “In case he won’t open the door.”

CHAPTER 42

Duke

After another dose of Advil,a gallon of water, and an omelet with all the hot sauce I could stand, I was sober, and I’d almost conquered the hangover.

Fucking Lucas hadn’t given me much choice when he’d taken all the liquor away. How long would it take for memories of her to fade so I could go back to sleeping in my bed?

Maybe it would be better if I threw this one out and bought another.

The doorbell rang and rang again, forcing me up off the couch. I was so over having my family give me advice that was totally useless. “Who is it?” I demanded. Only my family was cleared past the lobby.

“It’s me.” Serena’s voice carried through the door. “We need to talk.”

At least I had a locked door between us, keeping me from making the mistake of getting lost in those pale-green eyes. “We don’t have anything more to talk about.”

“Yes, we do.”

“No. It’s over.” She was safely away from me.

“Open up, Duke.”

I pulled the pin on the nuclear grenade. “Leave. Ursula’s on her way over.” Then I walked back to my couch.Problem solved.

Serena

He wouldn’t,would he?That was pretty low.

With my stomach churning, I stomped to the other end of the hall—with my best smoky eye makeup, my best push-up bra paired with my sexiest red dress, and my Louboutins. I was dressed for battle, but only if I got to face him. I dialed his brother.

“Hey, Serena, can I help you?” Jordy asked.

“I need you to check a work schedule on Ursula Anders. She’s a flight attendant on SAS. I want to know where she is right now.” Yes, I had done my research on his blonde bombshell ex-whatever she was to him.

“Duke’s Ursula?”

“That’s the one.” My stomach almost revolted. I hated hearing that she was that much of a fixture in Duke’s life.

“Just a minute.” Furious keyboard clicks came across the line. “Her flight from Frankfurt to Stockholm already landed. You know it’s nine hours later in Stockholm, right?”

“Thanks a million, Jordy. I owe you.”
