I added the number as a contact for Angela, even though I had no intention of using it.Stay strong.

Justin was inside at the front desk, and as we entered he looked up from the computer, where he was most likely playing a game. “Hey, Mr. B.”

At the store, I would consider game playing in his spare time to be disrespectful to the customers, but here at night, if it kept him coming back to this boring job, I didn’t mind.

After returning his greeting, I learned that Clara had just arrived and was in the B wing. Angela and I started that way.

I was in luck. We were doing rooms of departed guests tonight, and the B wing was the one where we’d booked the fraternity group. Baptism by fire for Angela tonight. Nothing compared to cleaning up after partying college kids.

“Is Clara who we’re meeting?” Angela asked as soon as the lobby doors closed behind us.

“Be nice to her. I’m vouching for you. So don’t screw this up.”

“Just asking.”

I halted and raised a finger, keeping my voice low. “You can’t keep talking all night.”

She ignored my suggestion. “It’s natural to be curious.”

I moved closer and caught a whiff of coconut.

She backed up a step.

“This is a hotel. The guests don’t come to hear jabbering out their windows. They come here for rest, and above all quiet.” Mostly.

She made a zipping motion across her lips and tossed the imaginary key to the side.

If only I had a real lock for that mouth of hers. I was raised a gentleman, so I pulled open the door to the B wing and held it for her. “All the way down.” I pointed to the end of the hall where Clara stood.

Angela’s arm brushed mine as she went by, and the feeling of warmth unsettled me.Even vipers can be pretty, I reminded myself. Then my eyes fell to the sway of her ass as she walked ahead of me, and I forgot what I was thinking.

Just as the sirens of Greek mythology transfixed unsuspecting sailors, causing them to sail their ships into the rocks, this vixen was trouble. She was just as alluring as when she’d screwed me over before.

Closing my eyes for a few steps, I managed to break the trance before we reached Clara, who stood by her housekeeping cart outside an open room.

She had her hands on her hips. “I don’t know why we let college kids stay here. They’re pigs.”

I glanced inside the room, and it was even worse than I would’ve guessed. “You have to. Otherwise it’s called discrimination.”

“Then we oughta charge them extra, because their mamas sure didn’t teach them no manners,” she shot back.

I didn’t bother explaining that charging extra wasn’t allowed either.

Angela

A gray-haired ladystood by the first door on the right at the end of the hallway, shaking her head and bitching about college kids.

I didn’t see a man anywhere around, so I waited while Boone lectured her on discrimination. Getting to my new job and meeting the boss was evidently going to wait until he finished chewing the fat with this lady.

“This is Angela,” Boone said.

That woke me up.

“She’s your new housekeeper,” he continued.

My mouth dropped open, surprised. But I shouldn’t have been. At least it was a step up from septic-tank cleaner. I lifted a hand. “Hi.”
