Devlin sat down.

“Chief,” I said calmly. “The town’s employee manual clearly states that a second offense of the same infraction within ninety days of being placed on warning is cause for suspension.”

Earls face went red as he fumbled in a drawer. “Not so fast.”

“It’s on page fourteen,” I told him.

Devlin fidgeted.

Earl found his copy and turned even redder while scanning the page.

Angela’s smile grew, but I kept my face schooled.

“Dev,” Earl said. “Give me your gun, taser, and badge. You’re suspended for ninety days. No arguments.”

“Why?”

“One more word out of you,” Earl said sternly, “and it’ll be six months.”

“But, Pa—”

“Okay, six months it is. Badge now. Or do you want me to make it a year?”

With murderous eyes aimed squarely at me, Devlin complied and left the building without a word.

“You can tell your pa that I’ll remember this,” Earl said dryly.

I doubted it would help much, but I said it anyway. “He was completely against this.”

“And yet here you are.”

I nodded. “I make my own decisions.” I turned. “Have a nice day, Chief.”

As a group, we left the smelly building for the fresh air outside.

“How about a walk downtown and lunch at the Beach?” Rusty suggested to Pris.

“That would be great,” she said, linking her arm with his and getting a huge grin back.

Anna excused herself to drive to work.

Angela and I wrapped arms around each other as we walked back to the truck.

A few steps later, she stopped us. “My car.”

“I guess you’ll have to wait until after he and Pris have lunch for Rusty to open the impound yard.”

“I didn’t expect Pris to do that.”

“What?”

“Lunch, and also walking arm in arm with him,” she said nodding in their direction.

“You make sacrifices for family,” I explained.
