As I processed that request, I gave in and snuggled my head back against his chest. We finally had our dance, and there were still several verses left in the song.

I noticed Grace saying something to Dirk as she watched us.

Then a loud, angry voice I knew too well called out, “Angela, where are you?”

I tensed.

Kevin had arrived.

CHAPTER44

Boone

Angela jerkedin my arms at the sound of her name.

Looking left, I saw the asshole in a red shirt who’d yelled. I was six-two, but this Kevin dude was just as tall, and wider everywhere.

Angela had said he was big, but he looked like a steroid commercial gone wrong—a brute, or with a little added green coloring, the Hulk. This was going to be much harder than I thought. What I wouldn’t have given to have my brothers here.

Angela shivered and turned her head.

“No,” she protested as I twisted us the other direction so she couldn’t see his face.

“You’re working with me, right?” I reminded her when she looked up.

“You don’t understand.” She pulled her hands down to rest on my chest, pushing lightly to get loose.

“Answer me.” I kept her close with one hand and lifted her chin with the other. “Well?”

She nodded. “Okay.” But the fear in her eyes was clear.

It was sickening to think Angela felt compelled to go back to an asshole who made her feel this way. “I won’t let anything happen to you.”

She nodded meekly.

I stopped the dance. “Jealousy, remember?” I brought my lips to hers. For a second, her instinct to pull away worried me. She’d fought against being close during the dance, and now she was about to blow it.

The moment I started, I couldn’t hold back. It had been too long since we’d kissed, and I didn’t want this to stop. Maybe somehow she could feel the same.

A jolt ran down my spine as her resistance melted. With a hand behind the nape of my neck she pulled herself up into me and joined the passion. Our mouths and bodies melded fully. After a swipe of my tongue across her lips, she granted me access, and it was just like before. The citrus taste of the margarita she’d been drinking mixed with an equal part of what I judged to be desire. Did I have her back, or was this just the acting I’d insisted on?

“Angela,” the asshole called again, closer this time.

The yell made her shiver.

I broke the kiss and saw what I craved in her eyes—she didn’t want this to stop. I touched a finger to her lips. “Hold that thought.”

“Get your hands off her.” Asshole’s words came from only a few feet behind me now.

The couple next to us stopped dancing and nervously stepped away.

I turned and shifted Angela behind me at the same time. “Hey, man, what’s your problem?” I spat with an attitude to match his.

The music hadn’t stopped, but all the dancing around us had as the crowd parted. They knew watching a bar fight was a lot more fun than getting tangled up in it.

“Angela, you’re coming with me,” he insisted, still loudly.

“Fuck you. Go find your own girl.” I kept Angela caged behind me so he couldn’t grab her.
