KEVIN: I’ll be at the bar in thirty minutes. Be ready to go so we can get back to Richmond tonight.

I felt the blood drain from my head.

“What is it?” Pris asked.

The second message made my knees go weak.

KEVIN: Be ready, or I’m reporting you for stealing the car. You’ll be arrested tonight.

My world was about to implode. My stomach rioted.

“Hey, it’s your turn.” Anna prodded me.

I hunched over, bracing myself on my knees as my stomach lurched.

“Bucket,” Pris yelled.

One of the girls got it under me just in time to catch the contents of my stomach. Before I could wretch again, Pris pulled me toward the bathrooms. “Not out here, for Christ’s sake, girlfriend.”

Jordan carried the bucket along while I held my hand to my mouth and trotted along with Pris.

I heard Callie ask, “What’s wrong?”

We made to the toilets, and Jordan held my hair while I spewed a bit more.

I felt like my intestines were trying to turn themselves inside out.

When I straightened up, Pris gave a quizzical look. “Were those chips bad?”

She knew it wasn’t the chips. After rinsing the vile taste out of my mouth, I answered. “He’s coming.”

“Who?” Callie asked.

“Kevin,” I said sheepishly, still feeling ill about what was about to happen. “My ex.”

Callie shook her head. “Fucking A.”

Pris thought the answer was simple. “Tell him to fuck off.”

“I’ll call Case,” Anna suggested as she lifted her phone.

I reached out to stop her. “No. I have to go with him.”

“You don’t want to fucking do that,” Pris said.

The door opened, and a woman I didn’t recognize started in.

Pris raised her hand. “Private meeting. Use the men’s room.”

The woman was too startled for a second to do anything, but then she left.

“I don’t have a choice,” I said as I handed my phone to Pris.

Her eyes widened as she read the texts. “When’s this going down?”

“He could walk in any minute,” I answered.

“Should I get Case?” Anna offered again.
