Looking out the window, Pris hurried out, slamming the door behind her.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I heard her yell.

“I need to talk to Angela.” Boone’s voice was unmistakable.

My gut clenched, and I pulled my knees up to my chest. Everything about my plan was falling apart—trapped here with no car and no place to go to avoid him.

“You can turn right around,” Pris said. “She’s having a really shitty day.”

“Out of the way, Pris.”

“Or what? You wanna fight? Maybe punch your first woman?”

I fumbled with the handle and yanked the door open. I couldn’t stand by while there was sibling bloodshed. Boone’s eyes snapped instantly to me as a smile swept over his face. His magnetic appeal was even stronger after a night without him.

The words spilled out of me. “I don’t want to listen to anything you have to say, Boone.” My mouth was on autopilot again, but this time it got the words right—I couldn’t talk to him. It would only mess everything up. In his arms I’d felt safe, protected, like everything would work out. But I’d made the decision, and changing it would only lead me down the wrong path.

His eyes betrayed confusion as the smile fell away. “I need to explain.”

“Hey. It isn’t always about you,” Pris snorted.

Remain strong, don’t give in to temptation.Debbie’s words reverberated in my head. Taking a deep breath, I shook my head. “Don’t come back. You’re a rotten human being, and I don’t ever want to talk to you again.”

Shocked, Pris looked between us with her mouth half open.

I retreated into the cabin and closed the door.

With the click of the latch, I knew I was closing the door on that part of my life and moving on.

Muffled words were exchanged outside for a minute. I heard “fucking Devlin” more than once. Then, Boone’s truck started up and drove off.

Pris returned, stomping inside. “I told him about your car, and I think he gets that you’re having a bad day, but rotten human being?”

“Too harsh?” I shrugged.

“He’s my brother. Sure, he’s an idiot at times, but he’s not a rotten human being. I should kick your ass for that.”

I shivered. If she threw me out, I’d have nowhere to go. “Sorry. I didn’t know what else to say to get him to leave me alone.”

She sighed. “I get it. He was a jerk. You miss him, but you don’t trust yourself.”

I went back to the table and picked up the next sheet. “I should get back to these.” I didn’t trust myself to talk about him with her. I had a plan, and I’d stick to it. Forgiving first one insult, and then another and another had been the mistake I’d made with Kevin. I wouldn’t repeat it.

My phone chimed with a text message.

“He’s persistent. I’ll give him that,” Pris commented.

I checked the screen. “It’s not him.”

LAURIE: How is Florida?

Another reminder that my plan had been completely destroyed.

CHAPTER40

The flowers had started comingthe morning after my car was towed. The bouquet was a dozen pink roses. The card was simple.
