Pris’s truckwasn’t outside her cabin, and a knock yielded only silence, so I let myself in. It was cramped but cozy as always. Pulling out my phone, I texted her.

ME: I need a place to crash tonight. Mind if I stay with you?

Her reply only took a minute.

PRIS: Not Boone’s place?

Of course she’d ask the logical question.

ME: No

Pris: Bad?

She was his sister, so she’d naturally be curious. She’d also be on his side, so I didn’t want to say much, and for sure not any of the critical, biting comments I felt like.

ME: Sort of

PRIS: Sure - see ya later

Relieved that she’d let it drop without probing further, I brought my duffel in and settled on the loveseat. In desperate need of some companionship, I texted my girls. Talking with them always helped me relax.

ME: Broke up with Lancelot

It was a few minutes before I got a reply, but I couldn’t expect them to always have time for me, or to be in a place where they could type on their phones.

DEBBIE: That’s what I was telling you to do. Well executed.

ME: I didn’t plan it

As a matter of fact, I’d expected the exact opposite outcome just a day ago—hell, an hour ago.

DEBBIE: I warned you, rebounds are to get it out of your system—enjoy and be done.

I didn’t have anything to say to that.

DEBBIE: It also means he wasn’t Lancelot.

She had a point there. Lancelot would trust me and save me.

DEBBIE: Aren’t you leaving soon for your mom’s?

ME: Tomorrow was the plan

DEBBIE: Alone tonight?

ME: Yes

DEBBIE: Wondering if you did the right thing?

She had a good handle on the situation. My leg started its trembling again. I pressed down on my thigh to stop it. It didn’t work.

ME: Yes

DEBBIE: Indulge in a glass of wine to celebrate your good fortune. It will help you sleep well. With a long drive, you don’t want thoughts of him keeping you awake tonight. Two glasses of wine does it for me. One more day and you’re free of the dragon. Remember the rebound isn’t the one. He isn’t your Lancelot.

Debbie had been mostly right on my Kevin situation. I was one day from completing my plan. What she didn’t understand was the complexity of my feelings for Boone.
