“What?” he asked, catching my stare.

Drawing us into a personal conversation right now would be a bad idea. I needed to keep my distance to make cutting it off easier. “Nothing.”

“Spit it out, Nickels.”

That tickled me every time he said it. “I was thinking you went a whole conversation without calling meStanford.”

“The things I sacrifice for you,” he mused.

His words brought home how minor that was in the list of things he’d done for me, for me and Lara.

We walked on in silence.

It was just going to be a casual dinner tomorrow to repay his kindness, right? No commitment to anything more. How hard could that be?

Chapter 21

Josh

Yesterday over lunch,Nicole had agreed to dinner, and tonight I was collecting.

I felt the spark again as I guided her through the front door of Aldolfo’s with a hand at the small of her back. My mind raced, wondering what her skin would feel like as I traced a finger down her neck to the swell of her breast and then…

“How many in your party?” the young hostess asked, pulling me back to reality.

I held up two fingers.

She nodded and picked up menus. “Right this way.”

I let Nicole go first and was treated to the sway of her ass as I followed. I could watch that walk all day long.

Nicole’s smile as she took a seat across from me had that same inviting warmth I’d seen just before she got dunked in Barbados.

Our waiter arrived, poured water, introduced himself, and asked, “Can I start you off with something to drink?”

I gestured for Nicole to respond first.

“A glass of house chardonnay, please,” she said.

“I’ll have the same,” I told him.

“Red sometimes gives me a headache,” she admitted after our server left.

“Me too. See? We already have something in common.”

“You always order chardonnay?” she asked with narrowed eyes.

Busted. Again.

“No. Normally I would have a pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc, but tonight I’m trying the bonding routine you suggested.”

“I don’t think I exactly suggested it,” she said.

“Is it working?”

That pulled a smile out of her. “At least your effort is appreciated.”

“Now that it’s been a week or so, have I managed to climb out of the ogre category?”
