JOSH: Just like their recipient.

I didn’t immediately text back to that. This was getting too hot too quickly, and the line had to be drawn somewhere.

ME: Goodnight

JOSH: What night would you like to have dinner?

ME: I said maybe

JOSH: I can be patient.

JOSH: How about Friday?

ME: No

ME: Don’t you understand maybe?

JOSH: See you tomorrow

I took in the fragrance of the flowers. I knew the man was trying to wear me down, and the flowers were truly thoughtful. They made me feel shitty about what I’d just typed. I should be able to say no without being mean about it.

ME: Thank you again

JOSH: I thought you could use some cheering up

Why did he always have to get the last word?

I decided to let him. I put the phone down, opened the door, and called for Echo to come in.

Upstairs ten minutes later, my phone vibrated on my nightstand.

JOSH: If Friday doesn’t work for you, I have Saturday free.

I ignored it.

JOSH: Have I told you green is my favorite color?

JOSH: Eye color that is.

If I was ever going to get to sleep, we had to finish this, so I selected his contact and hit call.

He answered the phone, “Have I?”

I didn’t want to go down this route. “No.”

“I’m glad you called.”

“Look, I’m really tired, and I thought this way I could answer your questions faster and we could get to bed sooner.”

“I accept,” he laughed. “I’ll be right over.”

My poor choice of words had walked me right into that one.

I hazarded a guess. “Have you been drinking?”

“A little,” he admitted. “But green is still my favorite color.”

“How little?”
