I stood. I didn’t need to hear both sides of the conversation to know something was terribly wrong. I took her arm as she stuffed her phone away, and I urged her ahead of me toward the door.

She trotted toward the car. “It’s Lara. I have to get back.”

“We,” I corrected her. “Team, remember?”

Chapter 17

Nicole

“What’s wrong?”Josh asked as we approached the car.

“Lara is scared somebody’s outside the house. I have to get back.”

He unlocked the car with his key fob. “Tell her to call 9-1-1.”

I snorted as I grabbed the door handle. “That’s not going to happen.” I climbed up into his big car.

“Then you call. It’s the safe thing to do.” He accelerated into traffic.

I held on and shook my head. “I can’t violate her trust that way. She’s scared of the police.”

He pulled his phone out.

“You can’t,” I complained.

“I am. You can have another reason to hate my guts.”

The problem was I didn’t hate him—but this still wasn’t right.

“What’s the nature of your emergency?” came over the speaker.

“Possible prowler at 4312 Orangebranch Lane,” Josh said calmly.

“Sir, are you in the house?”

I nodded when Josh looked over.

“My cousin, Lara, is in the house and scared. I’m on the way. Please hurry,” he said before hanging up.

I held on as Josh weaved his way around the other cars on the road. “Yourcousin?” I asked.

“It was quicker that way.”

Something to file away for the future, a big something: Josh felt at ease taking liberties with the truth.

“I was calling for you anyway,” he added.

It made more sense when he said it that way, but still didn’t align completely with the truth.

“What did Lara say?” he asked.

I’d only understood part of it. “She was too scared to make any sense.”

He accelerated around a van.

I braced. “It won’t help anybody if we don’t get there in one piece.”

He shot a quick glare my direction. “Hold on, and trust me.”
