“Goodnight, Nicole.” I stepped back.

She rushed forward and gave me a tight hug, her head against my shoulder.

The feel of her soft tits against me was exciting, dangerous even. Too many seconds of this and I’d be tempted to put my hands somewhere other than her back.

She quickly let go and backed away. “Thank you so much for all this.”

I held her hand at a distance for a second, not letting her get away. The temptation to pull her back to me for a proper squeeze with an added kiss boiled up. I let go instead, lest I be tempted to fuck it all up by forcing something she wasn’t ready for tonight. “Dinner.”

Her smile was captivating. “And dessert?”

“And maybe candles.” I backed up. “I’ll call you.”

“I’ll look forward to it.” She retreated to the door. As she inserted her key, the door swung open a bit.

“Stop.” I pulled her back, fished out my phone, and punched up the flashlight.

The door jamb was broken. The door had been kicked in, and in the light from my phone, the broken glass of a front window was visible as well.

She gasped. “Oh my God.” She pulled away and pushed open the door.

The dog rushed out.

She knelt to greet it. “Are you okay, boy?” She nuzzled the big Labrador frantically trying to lick her face.

I pulled her and the dog away from the door while dialing 9-1-1. “Wait by the car,” I told her before the emergency operator answered.

She opened her mouth to object. “But I need to check.”

It was always an objection with this girl.

“Now,” I insisted, pointing to the street. “You can go in after the cops.”

A few minutes later, an LAPD black and white arrived, with its lights flashing.

I kept Nicole by the car while the two cops cleared the house.

Officer Bendretti handed me his card after he returned to us. “You can go in your house now,” he told me. “The only apparent damage is in the front room.”

“It’s hers,” I told him, nodding to Nicole who was holding her dog by the collar.

After a few cursory questions for the officer’s paperwork, they left.

Nicole and I ventured inside. Glass littered the floor near the two windows, and the wordsleave or diehad been spray-painted on the area rug in the front room.

Nicole cringed visibly when she took in the scene.

Nicole

The horrible wordspainted on Grandpa’s rug chilled me as much as the Iowa rain had.

“Who would do this?” Josh asked.

I shook my head without an answer.

He pulled at my elbow. “You need to come with me.”
