The door closed behind him. His waffles sat on the plate, uneaten.

An hour later,I found Winston on his laptop in the dining room, tapping away.

Gathering up my courage, I leaned against the doorframe. “I’m sorry for this morning. I didn’t mean to insult you.”

He turned and looked up. “No worries. We’re good.”

I nodded. “Or Josh.”

He didn’t say anything to that, but slid a nickel toward me. “You left this by the candlestick. You know what they say about a penny saved.”

I pocketed it. “Thanks.”

I thought I’d gotten them all, but apparently not. Josh’s reason for picking buffalo nickels came back to me in a rush and brought an unintended smile to my face. I quickly wiped it away and changed the subject. “What are you working on?”

“Work stuff.”

“What kind of work? I’m curious.” I was also bored to tears being stuck in this house.

“Well,” he started. “I’m following a financial trail related to a missing persons case.”

“Can I help somehow?”

“No,” he said firmly.

Josh

I choseto drive my Lamborghini to Dad’s house for this meeting, just to emphasize that I could do what I wanted.

Duke rode his Harley, but Serena insisted on driving with me, to make sure I made it without turning around and heading for Reggie’s bar.

Mom and Dad were out front when we pulled into the circular drive.

Dad turned with a distinct scowl and retreated into the house as I exited the bright yellow car. Driving the Lambo had produced my desired effect.

Serena, Duke, and I all got hugs from Mom before entering.

We were the last to arrive. Dennis, Jennifer, Zack, and Brittney were already here, and we all exchanged greetings.

Dennis whispered, “Do you have any idea what this is about?”

I guessed, even though Serena hadn’t been specific. “My execution, most likely.”

My answer startled him. “What did you do?”

“I think it has to do with me telling Dad to shove it.”

He chuckled under his breath. “Good luck with that.”

Mom offered coffee all around before inviting us into the dining room, which had enough chairs for everyone.

I took a seat midway down one side.

Serena sat next to me, with Dennis on the other side.
