I had to mentally check myself. I’d just thought of this as our place, and it hadn’t freaked me out. It would be four weeks this Saturday since my almost-dinner with Josh in Barbados.
“You know what next Monday is?” I asked him.
He looked up and chewed. “Got me.”
“Think hard, Mr. Caveman. You can get it if you try.”
“If this is one of those Cosmo tests, I refuse.”
“Come on, I’m sure a USC guy can figure it out.”
He shook his head. “Pass.” To emphasize the point, he filled his mouth with a huge piece of waffle.
I sighed. “Our one-month anniversary, dummy.”
He nodded and finished chewing before he spoke. “A month and you still won’t honor your promise, you mean?”
“What have I not done?” I shot back.
“Your turn to think hard, Miss Stanford grad.”
Stanfordhad been replaced byMiss Stanford grad, which wasn’t much of an improvement.
“Starts with a T.”
I searched my brain.Blowjobandswallowdidn’t start with a T, and those hadn’t been promised anyway.
“Think back to the first note I wrote you.”
It came to me in a flash. “Tiramisu,” I shouted.
“Dinner and dessert. You owe me the whole enchilada, Nickels. I keep my promises. You should learn to do the same.”
The truth of his words shamed me. I’d been the one to refuse the dessert at our last dinner. “I’ve been judged and found wanting. Can I make up for it with Aldolfo’s tonight, including dessert?”
He offered his hand across to me.
I took it and got that electric spark I felt every time I looked into those blue eyes of his and saw the connection I longed for.
“Nickels, I don’t find anything about you wanting, and I’d be honored to escort my girl to dinner tonight.”
“Woman,” I corrected him.
“Lady,” he countered.
I didn’t deserve the designation, but I’d learned to not argue that one.

At the endof the day, I cornered Dad in the Benson building before I had to leave for dinner with my girl. “I have a question.”
“Shoot,” he said.
“What have I done wrong recently to get on your bad side?”
Oddly, he smiled. “You noticed, did you?”
