“And that’s it?” Dad asked.

Adam put up his hands. “That’s it until tomorrow.”

“Okay,” Dad said. “I guess we’ll have to wait. Now, not a word of this to the others.”

The group disbanded, and I knew the secret wouldn’t last a day in this family.

Adam took me aside for a second to discuss strategy for tomorrow.

When we got back to the group, it only took a minute for Nicole to ask, “What’s up?”

I tilted my head toward Dad. “Tell you later, but I think it’s good news.”

Nicole grabbed one of the Swedish meatballs from the counter with a toothpick and offered it to me—delicious.

The doorbell rang.

Serena followed me and Kelly to the front. “That better be the big lug.”

Adam wasn’t far behind.

When Kelly opened the door, it was Dennis and Jennifer, finally.

“Jennifer, this is my youngest sister, Kelly,” Dennis said, making the introduction.

Kelly hugged Jennifer briefly.

Adam moved forward to offer his hand. “Adam Cartwright.”

Jennifer took it with a gracious smile.

Adam and Dennis appraised each other.

Dennis made the first move and produced a bottle from behind his back. He offered it to Adam. “A peace offering.”

Adam accepted it, and the two shook. “Welcome to our home.”

Dennis lifted a brow at Adam’s description ofour home, but Adam had staked our Kelly as his now.

“Glad you invited us,” Dennis added.

Adam examined the bottle. “Macallan 1926?” A hint of a smile crept across his face.

“Dennis thought you’d like it,” Jennifer interjected.

Kelly urged the group to move from the entryway to the living room.

Serena grabbed Jennifer. “Let me introduce you to Vincent and his wife. They’re down from Boston.” After they left, it was just Kelly, me, and the two silent bulls eyeing each other.

“I have something to say,” Dennis started.

Kelly stayed, but that was my cue to leave and let them settle it in private.

Before long, the three joined us in the back of the house, and everyone looked much more relaxed—no one was bloodied.

We opened the expensive bottle of scotch, and before long, everyone had a glass in hand.

“A toast to the couple,” Dennis said loudly.
