Gary and Wenzel left with Gary smiling, probably because he no longer had to deal with me asking endless questions.

Nicole

Gary showedup at my door with a stranger in tow.

“Got a moment, Nicole?” he asked.

I stood. “Sure.”

The stranger followed him in—a banker from the looks of his suit.

“Wenzel, this is Nicole Rossi, our VP of operations,” Gary announced.

The stranger extended his hand. “A pleasure, Ms. Rossi. Wenzel Bremmer.”

Gary shuffled his feet. “Wenzel is here for Mrs. Quantell’s position.”

The statement brightened my day. We couldn’t go long without somebody as CFO. It was just odd that Rosa hadn’t mentioned we had a candidate to interview today.

“Thanks, Gary. I’d be happy to squeeze in some time for an interview.”

Wenzel’s mouth twitched. “I believe I already have the job.”

Gary grimaced. “I forgot to say, Mr. B already brought him in.”

This was getting curiouser and curiouser. “Really?”

Wenzel nodded. “Gary’s been nice enough to introduce me to the…uh,playershere.”

The way he called usplayersturned my stomach.

“You seem surprised, Ms. Rossi,” he added.

“Nicole, please. It’s just that Josh hadn’t mentioned anything to me about you.”

“Ah, I see…” Wenzel stroked his chin. “Need to know, I guess. He requested my services from the Benson organization, and I’m only here temporarily to help out. I’ll let you know what I need from you after I get my bearings. I was pulled over from the controller position at Smith’s, most recently.”

I worked hard not to show my relief when he saidtemporary. Rossi’s didn’t need any more surprise changes at this point, like forcing another Benson person on us.

Josh had been pissed that the last candidate the Benson group had suggested had next to no experience, and if this guy had been the Smith’s controller, he’d have some grocery knowledge.

An hour later my phone rang with an unknown number. I considered not answering, except the area code was 202, and I was expecting a call from the FDA.

“Hello?”

“Nicole? This is Kelly Benson calling, Josh’s sister.”

“Hi, Kelly.”

“Nicole, you’re coming Saturday, right?”

Josh had locked me into attending by telling me he’d already told his whole family I was coming.

“Sure am. I’m so excited for you.”

“Me too. Wish I could say the same for Adam. He’s a little nervous about the party, with the history and all.”
