“Yes.”

“Can he set me up with one of them?”

Josh chewed and sent me another curious look.

I tilted my head at him and shrugged, trying to look bored. “I don’t know the answer to that.”

Josh sipped his juice, not taking his eyes off of me.

“Help a girl out and let me know,” Sandy said.

“Here. You can ask him yourself.” I offered the phone to Josh. “Sandy has a question for you.”

He swallowed and took the phone. “What would you like to know?” His lips turned up in an expanding smile. “The Lakers? Sure, I think they have a chance this year… Uh-huh, even against Golden State… Nice talking to you too, Sandy.” He hung up.

I lifted the last piece of my breakfast to my lips.

He put the phone down and stifled a laugh. “What did she really want to ask me?”

To give myself time to think, I pointed to my mouth as I chewed. It didn’t help me come up with a witty response. “She wanted to know if you could set her up with one of your brothers.”

“Sorry, they’re all taken,” he said, sipping some of his coffee.

I navigated on my phone to theTimeswebsite and located the article.

Anger heated me as I read. It mentioned the similarities to the case five years ago and included plenty of implications that the police considered Lara to be the prime suspect.

The details could only have come from that asswipe Beal. I vocalized the only thing that fit. “That asshole.”

“Who?” Josh asked.

I handed him the phone. “Beal. He really has it in for Lara.”

Josh swiped up and down the page. “It only happened last night. They didn’t do any investigating. They only wrote what they were told, I’m sure.”

“You’re defending them?”

He put up his hands in surrender. “Not at all. But they’re just merchants of misery out to make a buck. I’m on your side, remember?”

Josh’s phone rang as I cleaned up the dishes. He declined the call. “Unknown number.”

It rang again and again.

He answered it the third time. “Hello?”

He motioned me over a second later and put it on speaker.

Chapter 27

Nicole

“They think I did it,”Lara’s voice came over the phone. “All I did was stumble onto it.”

I answered. “Hey. It’s good to hear your voice. Are you all right?” I tried to sound happier than I felt. She probably needed it.

“I couldn’t stay,” she said, her voice still jittery.

“Are you okay?” I repeated.
