Helpwas too mild a word. “A ton.” I yanked my pants up. “Your turn.” I tried, but I couldn’t roll over with him straddling my legs.

“I said no need.” He pulled up the hem of my shirt and re-hooked my bra—completely too proper.

“Come on. Let me do you.” Once again, my mouth ran ahead of my brain filter. I didn’t intend the innuendo—or did I?

He climbed off me and stood. “Not tonight.” He walked back to the kitchen to resume his work without another word.

“Want to join me and relax a while?”

He turned at the door. “Not tonight.” A moment later, he was gone again.

I hadn’t won, but I’d survived my brief foray into risky, and it had felt exhilarating, even if it had ended too soon.

A bit later, I got up to try again.

Adam was hunched over the laptop, staring at the screen and scrolling with the touchpad.

I came up behind him and started to knead his shoulders, not as hard as he had me, but in the same manner. “Does this help?”

He had a report on the screen instead of the bank video. He slammed the laptop lid closed. “Not tonight, I said.”

I worked his muscles harder. “What’s the problem?”

He scooted the chair back and stood. Turning to me, he grasped my shoulders and spun me toward the door. “Not tonight. I have to concentrate.”

I took one step toward the door and pivoted back to him. “And you find me distracting?” I should have taken a moment to think up a better line, but it expressed how I felt.

He scowled. “Can’t you do what I ask for a change?”

“What do you meanfor a change? Kelly, do this. Kelly, don’t do that. You’re always giving me orders.”

He turned away, sat, and opened his laptop again. Then he looked over at me with an unspoken command to get lost.

I stood my ground.

His phone rang, and he picked it up.

“I’ll leave you alone.” I reached behind and unhooked my bra.

“Hi, Mom,” he said into the phone.

Wiggling out of the straps, I pulled it out from under my shirt and threw it on the table.

His eyes bugged out.

After retreating to my couch, I restarted the TV and turned up the volume to keep from eavesdropping on his family call.

Adam

“What’s her name?”Mom asked.

I waited until Kelly was farther away. “Who?”

“The woman I heard talking to you.”

“Nobody. Just work.” I removed my eyes from the lacy bra she’d thrown on the table.
