Yolanda joinedus shortly after we got to the house with the food. We gathered around the table and dug in. Before long she spooned more rice onto her plate. “This is hotter than I remember.”

Reminding her that she’d had the same complaint last month wouldn’t help.

“Try the beef with broccoli,” Adam suggested.

Instead, she added another helping of the Nanjing chicken she was complaining about. “They must have changed the recipe.”

I took a sip of my iced tea.

“Did you stop any wars today?” she asked Adam.

“If I did, I couldn’t tell you,” he replied with a smirk.

“I wish my boss had given me more of a heads up,” Yolanda said, changing the subject.

I stopped my fork mid-flight to my mouth. “About what?”

“This stupid Hollywood traveling exhibit. I don’t mean the exhibit will be stupid; it’ll be gorgeous when I’m done with it, but I need to work all weekend to have it ready for the opening on Tuesday.”

“Bosses can sometimes be unreasonable,” Adam said. “Don’t you agree, Kells?”

I shrugged. “Mine’s not so bad.”

Yolanda finished chewing. “You’re lucky.”

After dinner, Yolanda retreated upstairs, and Adam went back to the couch with his computer on his lap.

I joined him after finishing the cleanup. “Can you tell me about what you’re doing? I mean, without having to shoot me or something?”

“No. I have to concentrate.”

I scooted up against him. His warmth felt comfortable instead of intimidating. I whispered in his ear. “My boyfriend should share with me.”

He nodded. “I guess. This is the bank robberies Neil and I are working. A group we call the Guy Fawkes Crew.”

“How do you come up with names like that?”

“This one is because of the masks they wear.”

I nodded. “And how is this helping you?”

“We’re going over footage from the time before the robbery, looking to catch them casing the place so we can get an image of his face.”

“If he wore a mask during the robbery, how will you know it’s him?”

“He has a distinctive limp, and on this last job they brought along…” He paused. “A woman. She wasn’t wearing a mask, so we might see them together, or maybe just her.”

I decided on a challenge. “Can I see the robbery?”

“No. It’s top secret.”

“Now who’s not being honest?”

He rubbed his chin before agreeing and switching windows again.

A screen divided into four frames started, and he ran it through until they’d just gotten money from the teller windows when he stopped it.
