At the end of the day, Neil got off the phone and turned to me. “The team on the Phoenix kidnapping is flying out. They’ll be here by lunch tomorrow.”

Great, more time out of our day.

“And get this,” he added. “There’s another Boston connection.”

I looked up. “Yeah?”

“One of them is Liz Parsons.”

“The Boston bombing?”

“The same, so be nice.”

Elizabeth Parsons had been injured in a bombing meant to kill both her and her partner, Ashley Newton—now Benson. It was the most significant bomb attack aimed at federal law enforcement since the Oklahoma City bombing, so everybody in the Bureau knew her name.

First Ashley Benson taking our SMK case up to the director and telling us how to handle it, and now Liz Parsons getting involved in the Guy Fawkes robberies? What was coming next—the director himself supervising our stakeouts on the trafficking case? This was unreal.

First thing at my desk,I checked the email account.

I let out a relieved sigh when the page showed nothing new. How many more days would I have to dread coming to work?

Without an email from the Ghost to torment me, this morning’s shower encounter took over my thoughts.

What was it about Adam that turned me on? He was so unlike any of the guys I’d dated, not even the same species.

“I don’t do gentle. You deserve better,” he’d said. The words ran through my brain on constant repeat. Thedon’t do gentlecomment reeked of a dangerous warning.

I left for an early lunch and dialed the one person I could ask about this.

Serena answered quickly, “Hey, what’s wrong?”

“Why does something have to be wrong for me to call my big sister?”

She snorted. “This is only the second time you’ve ever called me during working hours, and the last time was because you’d gotten that creepy note.”

Was I that predictable?

“Ashley said she got you fixed up with a bodyguard. Is that working out?”

I leaned against the building and sighed. “She was a big help.”

“So what’s wrong?”

I wasn’t sure how to ask this. “What if a guy suggests…” I couldn’t bring myself to say it.

She waited a few seconds before asking, “What?”

“Uh…rough sex?”

She laughed. “You think just because Duke has ink and ear gauges he’s rough with me?”

I hung my head. “I didn’t mean—”

“Messing with ya, Kell. He hasn’t hurt you, has he?”
