I rinsedmy plate at the sink. “Same as any other government employees. We shuffle paper mostly.”

Yolanda scoffed. “No, really. Do you have some specialty or something?”

Kelly reappeared at the doorway.

I opened my arms to her. “Have a nice nap, Sugarbear? Your roomie wants to know if I even work for a living.”

Kelly shrugged as she walked my direction. “They won’t let me into his building to see.”

I took her in my arms and rubbed her back. “Missed you.”

She looked up at me and offered her lips. “I’m back now.” She closed the distance for a kiss.

I kept the kiss appropriately short, given our audience. “And it couldn’t make me happier.” The press of her breasts against me and the taste of her had blood leaving my brain and heading south, where I didn’t need it right now. The distracting strawberry scent of her hair lingered with me after we broke the kiss.

She turned to Yolanda and moved away enough to slow the stirring of my cock. “He won’t answer my questions either. Everything is top secret or something.”

“I do have a security clearance,” I said, trying to keep it truthful.

Yolanda took a swig of the beer in her hand. “You guys at State probably spend half your time causing problems so you have something to fix.”

I pulled Kelly to my side. “Not me. Right now I’m working on something very important and quite dangerous.”

Yolanda’s face scrunched up. “Like a war in the Middle East?”

I looked down at Kelly and back to Yolanda. “Not that serious, but lives are at stake.” The warmth of her against me only reminded me of the importance of this assignment.

Kelly’s hold on me tightened. “And we’re all very appreciative.”

More contact was not what I needed right now. I let go of her. “I have to get back to work.”

Yolanda put her beer on the counter. “At least my job stops when I leave the building. I’ll be upstairs if you need my advice solving the world’s problems.”

My eyes followed the pretty Yolanda out of the kitchen, watching the sway of her ass. Maybe watching Yolanda was the way to get my mind off of the annoyingly attractive woman I was here to protect.

Unfortunately for me, Kelly was more than pretty, and whatever chemical signals she gave off that my conscious mind couldn’t register were screwing with me in a way I didn’t know how to combat.

Yolanda mounted the stairs.

It hadn’t worked. Kelly’s strawberry scent was still with me. As I closed my eyes and traced a finger over my lip, the feel of her returned. Inhaling a deep, cleansing breath, I banished the memory and retook my chair. Work had to be the antidote. My laptop woke as I opened it in front of me.

Kelly found me a few minutes later with two glasses of wine. “Can I help?”

I paused the video. “No.” Her being close was the problem, not the solution.

She offered me one of the glasses. “A peace offering.”

I took it and set it down without drinking any.

She lifted her glass. “To getting to know each other better.”

“Yeah,” was all I said.

Getting work straightened out before the Fawkes case boiled over and burned me was what I needed. Getting further involved with a Benson, even a pretty one—especially a pretty one—was exactly the wrong prescription right now.
