The next envelope wasn’t as thick, and also being from OPS, it had my heart racing as I opened it.

This note was more complex than the last. I shivered as I read it, and re-read it.

How could I forget Melinda? I photographed the message with my phone.

“You’re in early.” It was Kirby behind me.

I quickly slipped the note back in its envelope and turned. “You’re the second one to tell me that.”

She checked her watch. “It’s true.”

I shrugged.

“Our horoscope says it’s not a good time to change routines.” She’d learned shortly after I started here that we had the same sign. “Want to get coffee?”

Keeping to a routine was a normal state for me. “Sure.” I tied the envelope shut before I left to follow Kirby for my cup of tea.

“You look tired.”

“Maybe a little.”

She put her cup under the machine and punched in her choice. “How’d the date go?”

I smiled and felt heat rising in my cheeks.

“Come on. That well, huh?”

I had to say something at this point. I shrugged. “A guy I knew in California.”

“That smile of yours says more than that.”

I added hot water to my cup. “I like him. But, my brothers wouldn’t approve.”

“Do they ever?”

I snorted. She had my brothers pegged. “No, not my brothers. But, he works at State, so he must have passed a background check.”

She poked around a little more about Adam, but I managed to keep my answers simple and short, except I did tell her his name.

The note was still waiting for me when we got back from our trek to the coffee room. With nobody walking by, I texted my picture of the note with a message to Adam.

ME: New note arrived - what do I do?

Adam

Sittingat my desk at the field office, I paused the dreaded bank video and read the text from Kelly slowly. When I’d finished, I held up my phone. “Neil, we got another communication from the Ghost.”

“Who’s the Ghost?”
