“Why are you the one they sent?”

“The truth of the matter is that most of the guys in the office are too old to pull off being your boyfriend. That left only Jerry and me, and nobody would believe he’d landed a fox like you.”

I turned back toward him, smiling in the dark.

“I mean, he’s so butt ugly, we were sure that the first time you met him, you’d be booking a flight out of town just to get away.”

I laughed. “So we’re back to you didn’t have a choice, then?”

“I could have refused, I guess, but I’m not stupid. The chance to hang out and kiss a girl as pretty as you doesn’t come along every day.”

He’d shifted again from cold to complimentary.

I scooted to look over the edge of the bed at him.

He looked up and smiled. Luckily the rest of him was covered by the sheet, and I didn’t have to resist glancing below his face.

I could sense the sincerity in his smile. “Thank you. You’re not so bad yourself.”

He took a finger, kissed it, and lifted it to my lips. “There’s nowhere I’d rather be. Goodnight, Sugarbear.”

I kissed his finger. “Goodnight.” I rolled back over and raised my thumb to trace my tingling lips. Just the memory of the kisses from my protective knight excited me.

I gazed up at my starlit sky and traced over my lips again and again. Before long, the sound of his breathing settled into the rhythm of sleep. I closed my eyes and listened to the rain. Safety was within my grasp for the first time since I’d opened the envelope with that horrid note.

In time, the familiar noise of my sound machine soothed me. I listened carefully and consciously matched my breathing to Adam’s. Slowly, sleep overtook me.

Chapter 10

Kelly

I woketo the sound of the shower in my bathroom. The door was closed, and it took a second for reality to penetrate the fog.

Adam Cartwright was in my shower.

Through the bedroom door, I heard Yolanda’s morning music.

She was up already, and playing rock to get herself going. Blocking out her morning music was one of the reasons I set my noise machine to play the rain so loudly.

If she was up and about, using the hall bathroom wouldn’t work. I’d have to wait for my turn here.

Last night’s scotches had taken a toll on my bladder, and after five more minutes of listening to the splashing water, I wasn’t waiting any longer. I rolled out of bed, determined to be an adult about this. I was sharing my bathroom with a strange man—what the hell was wrong with that? Liberated women did it all the time.

My sister Serena had even had a guy as a roommate after college for a while. I smiled to myself, remembering that had only lasted until Daddy found out. The guy miraculously got a job offer across the country that was too good to refuse. Odd coincidence? No way. Daddy had his ways of getting what he wanted, and the resources to pull them off.

Padding to the bathroom door, I decided against knocking. This was my house. I didn’t need permission to use my own damned toilet.

The sight that awaited me as I silently pushed open the door stopped me in my tracks.

My own Apollo clone faced away from me, the view only slightly blurred by the water droplets on the glass. The strong legs I hadn’t noticed last night led up to a tight, white ass, then tapered out across chiseled back muscles to the broad shoulders I hadn’t forgotten. The scene was right out of a movie, rising steam and all, as he held his head under the stream of water. In spite of willing myself to dash past the shower, I stood there, mesmerized by the view.

“Morning, Sugarbear,” he said.

Fuck.

I hurried past and into the toilet closet, turning on the light and closing the door. “Good morning.” I was sure I hadn’t made a noise, yet somehow he knew.

After finishing up, I purposely avoided looking toward the shower as I made my way to the sink.
