Back at my desk, I composed a text to Kelly.

ME: Take care of the door before you leave

Her response was quick

KELLY: OK

ME: Pick you up out front at 7 for our date

I waited, but no immediate response came back, which was a relief. I didn’t need an argument.

And now I had the additional task of evaluating her trustworthiness for the necklace Zanelli had given me. If I guessed wrong and she screwed me, it would be the second career a Benson had ruined for me.

Chapter 6

Kelly

When we returned from lunch,I’d let Kirby report to Heiden that we liked Tiffany for the job, while I brushed my teeth.

Having made the decision to stay and fight relieved me of the guilt I’d been carrying around. No more upchucking at lunch. I’d made the right choice.

It was done. I erased my message history with Adam on my phone.

The message that came later reminded me of the overall plan.

ADAM: Pick you up out front at 7 for our date

Seven was a bit later than I wanted to leave today, but I could use the extra time. Now that I was no longer weighed down by my internal debate, I could finish what I hadn’t gotten done this morning.

I hadn’t made much progress before I was interrupted by Adam’s next message, which made me laugh.

ADAM: Did you dress sexy for me?

The true answer to that was a solid no. My normal work attire didn’t move the sexy needle. I’d wasted a better outfit on Harold.

He was really serious about the boyfriend bit as a cover.

ME: No

ADAM: Wearing your smile would be just super sexy

I had to read it twice to be sure I had it right. The man was flirting, and I could use more of the feeling that gave me. But once again, who’d said that? The cover persona or the real Adam?

ME: Thank you

ADAM: I meant wearing just your smile would be super sexy

I giggled, but didn’t dare respond to that. Did he mean a smile and nothing else?

“Hey, what’s so funny?” Kirby asked.

I hadn’t heard her coming up. “Nothing.”

She’d seen me reading my messages. “I saw that. What’s so funny?”

“Just a guy.” If I was going to have a fake boyfriend, it made sense she’d be the first to know—after Yolanda, of course, if she were in town.

“Not Harold?”
