Adam
The next morning,I took Kelly back to her house and met the guy I’d called to fix her door.
It was after lunch and the contractor was still hard at work when the call from Rylie came. “Adam, how are you doing?”
“Okay considering.”
“Yeah, I know it’s rough.”
“What’s up?” I asked.
“I wanted to let you know that Heiden’s house turned out to have all the answers.”
“Like what?”
“The tech guys located the laptop he used to communicate with your girl, as well as the other victims. We even got a banking transaction for the sale of a stolen moon rock from the Smithsonian last year.”
“Anything else?”
“Found his communications with Sanderson. Looks like they met through a cancer support group. Anyway, the bigger news is that we have four more bodies in his backyard from before he recruited Sanderson.”
“Four?”
“Yeah, Heiden was SMK, and Sanderson was the helper—not the other way around. We’re IDing the victims now, and HQ is going nuts over this. I wanted to let you know before it hit the news tonight.”
“Thanks for the heads up.”
We finished up the call, and Kelly looked over. “Work?” she asked.
“Yeah. Nothing important.” The details could wait. She didn’t need any more trauma today.
Kelly wanted to order pizza and watchBonanzaall day, so that was the plan.
We were interrupted in the late afternoon by another call, this time from Dempsey.
Kelly paused the TV.
“Cartwright,” I answered.
“We have an appointment at HQ at five.”
“I’m off today. You suspended me, remember?”
“Not when HQ calls you’re not.”
“Send Rylie to relieve me, or I’m not budging.”
Dempsey fumed, but then agreed.
“What is that about?” Kelly asked.
