I pulled her back into me. “I know.”

“It was like a miracle. I said your name over and over in my head, willing you to hear me. And you came.”

“I said I’d never let anything happen to you.” I moved back and pulled her into the water to rinse her hair.

She sobbed. “What’s going to happen when your father finds out?”

I moved around to face her.

She wouldn’t look at me.

We were naked, and yet she’d put up a wall.

I pulled her chin up. “He doesn’t matter.”

“But he said—”

My anger boiled up. “Did he call you?”

She looked away.

“Did he?”

She looked down. “No.”

“What are you not telling me?”

She moved and pushed me toward the water. “You’re getting cold.”

“No, I’m frustrated that you still refuse to be honest with me.”

She sighed and hugged me. “I heard him threaten to kill your career if you kept seeing me.” She sobbed. “That’s why I ended things.”

I rubbed her back and rotated us to put her under the hot water. “You’re nuts, you know that? And even if he’d tried, I’d happily give it up to keep you.”

“You’re just saying that. I know how much the Bureau means to you.”

Her recalcitrance was becoming annoying.

I pushed her back enough to fix her eyes with mine. “Listen to me, Sugarbear. I love you. Nothing else matters. Nothing.”

At first, I couldn’t tell if the words registered with her.

She plastered herself against me and cried. “I love you too. But what if he follows through? I don’t want you to resent me.”

“That was an empty threat.”

I couldn’t gethis father’s words out of my mind. “Are you sure your father can’t hurt your career?”

He slapped my ass. “Stop that. Negative thinking is bad for you. I was thinking about moving to ATF anyway.”

I couldn’t help but worry that his father would find a way to smear Adam’s reputation at the Bureau. “But what if—”

He put his finger to my lips. “Stop right there, and don’t move.”
