He had a gun pointed at me. “Scream again, and I’ll shoot,” he yelled.

Pee dribbled down my leg. I couldn’t breathe.

He waved the gun, motioning me toward the refrigerator. “Move or die.”

I stumbled toward the fridge and fell before I reached it.Adam. I needed Adam.

“Get up.”

As I lifted myself to my feet again, all I could think of was Adam. I’d made him think I hated him, and he’d never know how much I cared.Adam. I concentrated on his name. If ever there were a time for ESP to work, now was that time.

“Get up, I said.”

Adam. Adam. Adam. I pulled myself up on the fridge handle.Adam. Adam. Adam.

“No more tricks. Phone on the counter.” He waved me to the side with the gun. Gone was the face of sorrow. A mask of hatred replaced it.

I put my phone on the granite.

Adam. Adam. Adam.

Chapter 44

Adam

The old guyhad to be a flower-delivery service.

I waited for the door to open again, and the guy to walk back to his truck, wherever it was.

My blood began to boil as the seconds ticked by and the door didn’t open.

Flower delivery guy didn’t compute anymore.

No fucking way is some douchebag like him taking my woman away from me.

I threw open the car door and stormed to Kelly’s house. I had a key. I didn’t need to wait, and I didn’t need to knock. Getting Kelly away from this loser was the priority.

If Baldy wasn’t flower delivery, who the hell was he? I approached, and my hand hovered over the doorbell, nervous that I still didn’t have a speech prepared.

Kelly screamed from inside.

I dug the house key out of my pocket, but before I could insert it in the lock, the words froze me.

“Scream again, and I’ll shoot,” the man yelled.

Barging into a situation I couldn’t see against an armed suspect was not the way to go. Against a guy with a hostage, it was stupid, and with Kelly as the hostage, it was absolutely insane.

I ducked down and scurried around the side of the house. Through a window, I caught a glimpse of Baldy waving a Beretta, urging Kelly to the front of the house.

He’d made the choice for me.

I had to hope the key Kelly had given me also worked on the back kitchen door. I’d sneak in through there and come up behind Baldy.

I pulled out my phone to dial 9-1-1, but decided against it.

MPD only arrived on scene one way: with sirens blaring, and that could turn this situation ugly in a hurry.

Instead I dialed the person I trusted most right now, Rylie.
