I considered it for only a millisecond before discarding the idea. I’d been a fool to think it could work between Adam and me. What never could have worked didn’t need to be fixed; it needed to be ended.

She pulled to a stop in front of Adam’s.

“Can you wait for me to get a few things? I’ll just be a minute.”

“His place?” she asked.

“Yeah.”

“Take all the time you need.”

I let myself in, threw the things I’d brought over into my suitcase, and wrote a note.

My key went under the mat after I locked his door for the last time.

When we arrived at my house, I handed her two twenties.

“The advice was free, dear.”

“Keep the change,” I said as I opened the door.

The advice might not have been worth it, but the compassion had been.

Adam

I parkedat home and checked my phone. Still no response from Kelly.

Once inside, I shucked off my suit and climbed into more comfortable clothes.

On my way to the fridge, I saw the piece of paper on the counter. What had been a miserable evening with Dad turned even worse as I read the note.

Adam

You’re a great guy, and I can’t thank you enough.

But I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and I need to move on.

I wish you all the best in your career.

Goodbye,

Kelly

My key is under the mat. You can mail me your key.

My fist came down hard on the counter. “Move on? What the fuck?” I yelled.

Send her the key?

Like, not even talk to her?

No fucking way in hell.

I looked at my phone for a second before pocketing it. This wasn’t a phone conversation.

The drive over was too short for me to formulate any kind of speech.
