Kelly was safe, and nothing else mattered.

“He’s gone,” Joe announced.

I holstered my weapon as Doug ran up.

Neil holstered his weapon as well. “You know this could have been avoided if we hadn’t repositioned on the other side.”

He might have been right, but I didn’t give him the pleasure of agreeing with him. “I made the right call.” I knew keeping a close cordon around Kelly was the most important thing.

He didn’t drop it. “If we’d stayed put, we could have gotten the drop on him when he picked up the package instead of running at him like mad men.”

“We needed to keep it tight around Kelly.”

His raised eyebrow indicated that he’d caught that I’d switched from Benson to Kelly. “That’s not good procedure, and you know it.”

His critique was damning.

“Her safety had to be the primary objective.”

“And if one of your rounds had missed him and hit a bystander on the street behind him?”

I stated the obvious. “I didn’t miss. Two shots, two hits. It’s a righteous shoot.”

“I didn’t say it wasn’t, but it wasn’t necessary. You let your emotions influence your call, and that’s a mistake you don’t want to repeat.” He turned away.

Doug held up the dead man’s wallet. “Leonard Sanderson, address in Chevy Chase. And a Smithsonian ID.”

I photographed both IDs with my phone.

The Metropolitan Police arrived, and Neil held up his creds as he approached them to explain.

At the same time, Doug phoned the incident in to the field office.

Rylie was holding a frantic Kelly by the fountain.

I walked their direction and was immediately assaulted by a crying Kelly. “He has Evelyn, and you killed him. We have to find Evelyn. We have to find Evelyn.”

Rylie let her go, and I took her in my arms.

She sobbed. “He said he has Evelyn.”

Fuck. This changed everything.

I grabbed her shoulders. “Who’s Evelyn?”

Neil left the body to come over.

She sniffed. “Evelyn Gossen works with me. She has the desk next to mine, and she hasn’t been in this week.

Neil held up the car keys. “We need to get over there now, then.”

“We’ll find her,” I told Kelly.

Her crying only increased.

“Neil and I have to go now. Rylie will take you to my place and stay with you till I get back.” I pulled Kelly off of me.

Rylie took her hand and accepted the house keys I pulled out.
