Kelly Benson had been instantlyrecognizable when I entered the restaurant. Not as obviously seductive as the redhead at the bar with her tits hanging half out of her top, but a sophisticated, beautiful girl somewhat insecure about her looks, by the way she dressed. Although, that could have been dictated by her work environment.

She’d been watching the door, but hadn’t recognized me. Her surprise when I took the chair across from her had been real. The girl had filled out in all the right places since I’d last seen her when I left for USC—full tits and a smile that could kill, when she let it loose. Her emerald eyes were striking against the light brown of her hair, and they carried a twinkle that hinted at an intelligence that wasn’t to be underestimated.

Neil had entered and taken a seat at the bar a few minutes after we ordered, to provide another set of eyes and so he’d recognize her more easily if he needed to later.

I’d had to keep reminding her we couldn’t talk freely with people around, and because I hadn’t prepared her, she’d reacted poorly to my taking her hand outside.

But the sidewalk was empty, and we weren’t likely being watched.

She adjusted her purse, took a deep breath, and took my hand again.

“That’s the idea,” I told her.

She looked up with a smile. “Does your job keep you very busy?”

“The client I just started with is getting my attention twenty-four seven.”

This fox could run the entire spectrum from seductive to playful to cunning. If she weren’t a Benson—and this were a real date—I’d be having her for breakfast, lunch, and dinner by the weekend. But that brought me right back to the facts: she was a fucking Benson.

I escorted her into the garage and to my car. For this assignment I’d switched from last night’s junker to my Lexus.

She swung her legs in as I held the door for her—legs that had been out of view during dinner, killer legs.

I rounded the car and climbed in. “I’ll take that note now.”

She fished a plastic bag with a paper inside it from her purse.

“And the envelope?”

“I didn’t keep it. It was just a brown interoffice envelope.”

“And who was it from?”

“It said our security department, but I don’t believe that.”

Neither did I. The evidence went in the backseat, but before I could hit the start button, the interrogation began.

“Is it just you?”

I pulled my finger back from the starter. “No, I have a partner. He was at the restaurant as well, but you won’t see Neil unless he’s needed, and I can call in more people as required. This doesn’t work if the Unsub sees you surrounded by agents.”

“Oh.”

“I’m really tired. Can we go now and talk on the way?”

She nodded, but my phone vibrated immediately, and I took it out to check.

NEIL: No tails from here

After showing her the message, I put it away and started the car. “Neil doesn’t think we were followed.”

“You expected to be followed?”

“Didn’t expect it. That was just a precaution. The note you got implied you’re being watched, and to be safe, we have to assume that can include away from work.”

“You’re scaring me.”
