Swartzman and Cartwright froze at the wordFBI.

“Have them wait a few minutes, please,” Dennis told Cindy.

She closed the door.

Dennis spun his pen. “They’re here to collect the evidence I have of your criminal conspiracy with my ex-wife.”

The blood drained from Cartwright’s face.

This was where it would get fun.

“Now, do you want me to pass it along, or would you rather listen to my proposed alternative?”

Cartwright answered by taking his seat again.

Swartzman followed.

Syd broke a smile.

“Very good,” Dennis said. “Syd, show them the agreements.”

Syd slid over a second set of papers.

Cartwright’s eyes bulged. “A ten-percent discount? That’s ridiculous.”

The first page was an agreement for them to convert their stock to company debt at a ten-percent discount from their purchase price.

“And you expect us to help you finance a going-private transaction?” Swartzman asked. “Is this a joke?”

“No, and for that you get one board seat.”

“That’s worthless in a private company,” Cartwright said.

“You’re the one who wanted on the board. I want to take the company private, and this way we both get what we want.”

Only, it wasn’t anything like what Cartwright wanted. Because once the company went private, he lost all leverage.

“The agents are waiting,” Dennis reminded them.

“A twenty-five percent premium, and I’ll consider it.”

Dennis took a long slug of his Coke. “Jennifer, you can handle it from here.” He stood to leave.

“The case won’t stand up,” Swartzman argued.

“Syd, you can bring the affidavits along in a few minutes.”

Syd nodded, and the door closed behind Dennis.

Swartzman pointed at me. “Nice try, but the SEC found the emails on your computer already, and that implicates you, not us.”

Cartwright nodded, and his smile reappeared.

Larry’s smile faded.

It was time, so I opened the folder I’d brought. “You directly attacked me, and if it were up to me, we’d be talking to the FBI right now. But Dennis is a nice guy and insisted on giving you a chance to find a mutually beneficial resolution.”

Cartwright huffed. “You have a losing hand, young lady.”
