“If you know who it is, we can bring him in for questioning,” she offered.

“Her, actually. But I have a different question. Is that enough to get a warrant for the thief’s email? And if you do get a warrant, will she know?”

“To your first question, if you and your employee sign affidavits that she was approached by this person, and that she turned over papers this person knew were trade secrets, the answer is yes. And no, she won’t know about the warrant, most likely. We serve the warrant on the internet provider, not the person.”

“Great. I’d like to get started this afternoon.”

Chapter 44

Dennis

(Two Days Later)

Late Wednesday morning, the stock was taking another nosedive. Larry’s wait-for-the-other-shoe-to-drop line wasn’t working anymore with the analysts, and Cartwright was trumpeting the SEC investigation every chance he got. Gumpert had called my direct number three times already this morning.

Cindy had handled him with more courtesy than he deserved.

Jennifer checked her watch. “She’s late.”

“That’s normal.”

Cindy popped her head in the open door. “She’s downstairs. Should I have security bring her up?”

“Why don’tyoubring her up? That would be more hospitable. Set her up in conference room three.”

“The boardroom is free, if you want to use that.”

I shook my head. “No. Three is perfect. She won’t be staying long. Oh, and have her seated facing the hallway.”

Cindy left, muttering.

“You didn’t tell her the plan?” Jennifer asked.

I tapped the folder. “Only you and Syd.”

Syd had to know, so he could check that all the legal technicalities were correct. He’d enjoyed the irony of the plan and wanted to sit in, but I’d said no.

A few minutes later, Cindy was back. “The two of them are ready for you.”

I stood and followed Jennifer to the conference room.

Melissa’s face turned an angry red when Jennifer and I entered. “What is she doing here?”

I pulled out my chair after Jennifer took her seat. “She’s my representative.”

Melissa’s lawyer slid a card across to Jennifer. “Karen Jenkins, Jenkins and Schwartz.”

Jennifer took the card, but didn’t offer one in return. “Oh, I’m not a lawyer.”

Confusion filled the lawyer’s face. “We thought this was going to be a resolution meeting.”

“Surrenderwas the word you used,” Melissa said.

Itwasthe wording I’d used. She just didn’t realize I meanthersurrender.

Cindy knocked and opened the door. “The FBI is here to see you, Dennis.”

“Tell them I’ll be a few minutes.” I turned far enough to see Parsons and Newsom waiting in the hall, wearing the FBI windbreakers I’d requested.
