I’d obviously thrown an unexpected wrench in the works by not jumping at the opportunity.

“Mark?” I asked.

“Yes. I’d start there. We weren’t given much time to work on these, so I’m sorry if it’s not what you were expecting.”

She didn’t get it. She was talking money, and I was thinking of not going at all.

“I just don’t make decisions like this on the spur of the moment.”

“We were told to have you sign this afternoon.”

She was obviously not the one to be having this discussion with.

“I’ll go talk to Mark, then, and be back later.”

She didn’t seem thrilled that I’d messed up the schedule.

I excused myself and stood by the elevator, rereading the paper.

Ernesto passed by me, all smiles. “See ya tomorrow, Jenn.”

I waved and decided to press theupbutton on the elevator. Only one person in our department was likely to be able to override this, and it wasn’t Mark.

Jay Fisher was in his office when I approached. It was just after five, and his assistant, Margie, no longer guarded the door.

He waved me inside. “Jennifer, come on in.”

I closed the door after me.

His brow lowered at my attempt at privacy. “Is everything all right?”

“I wanted to talk about the move.”

He nodded and looked over his glasses at me. “Okay?”

I took a seat opposite him and folded my hands, unsure how to put it. “I’m not sure going with Hydrocom is the right thing for me.”

He steepled his hands and leaned forward. “I see. It’s a promotion, and frankly, Jennifer, I think you’re ready.”

I couldn’t possibly explain my real motivations. “I’d like to stay here with this team.”

He sat back. “But your position here becomes redundant with the move.”Redundantwas a nice way of saying my job was going away.

“I understand. I’m open to changing areas, but I’d like to stay here with you, rather than go with them.”

“Do you have some particular issue with Mark or someone else in the group?”

That was my opening.

“Well, there was this… I’d rather not say.”

He seemed to be buying it. “If you stay, are you up for a challenge?”

“Yes. Certainly.”

He took a deep breath. “The hours may not be what you’re used to, and your new role can be a little demanding at times.”

“Not a problem,” I assured him. I needed something, anything that would let me stay in this building.
