I nodded. “Morning.” I couldn’t go so far as to saygood.
Mona touched my shoulder. “Dennis told us how invaluable you’ve been at his company.”
“And I told him he should have given you a bigger raise,” Martha added.
Dennis nodded. “So I agreed.”
That dropped my jaw to full fly-catcher mode. “But—”
“First,” Dennis said, interrupting me. “I need you to be honest with these ladies about something.”
The girls hung on his every word.
He sipped his mocha. “You see, ladies, Jennifer and I have been seeing each other for a while now, and hiding it from the people we work with.”
I cringed. Where on Earth could he be going with this? Was he about to unleash some sort of twisted revenge?
He took my hand.
I pulled it back.
He held his hand out for me again.
Martha elbowed me, and I put my hand forward. The warmth of his touch welded me to him as it always had before.
He put his other hand over mine. “Jennifer, I don’t want to hide our relationship anymore. I’m asking you to be my public girlfriend.”
This was nowhere on any script I’d imagined. My eyes welled up.
Martha elbowed me again. “Well?”
“Please?” Dennis added. “I understand why you did what you did, and now I need your help at the company.”
“Can you forgive me?” I managed.
“Of course. I love you, Angel.”
Martha pushed on my shoulder and whispered, “This is where you kiss him, dear.”
I leaned toward him, and our lips met in a simple but heartfelt kiss. The kiss I wanted to give him would have gotten us banned from the shop forever.
“If this place served liquor,” Mona said. “I’d order us a round of champagne.”
I liked the sentiment.
I broke the kiss to look into his eyes. “Just like that?”
“Just like that. You did what you did for an honorable reason, and someday I’ll tell you about how I once did something even worse.”
“I doubt it.”
He pulled me up to stand. “We have to get to work, girl. We’ll see you two next Friday.”
“It’s a date,” Mona replied.
“I want to hear about the raise,” Martha added.
Dennis pulled me toward the door. “Next time.”
