Jay’s logic seemed sound.

Syd’s silent nodding made it three to one that Melissa had thrown in with him, which made the situation that much worse.

“Thanks, guys. I need to figure out what to do next.”

Larry and Syd left.

Jay stopped at the door. “You might want to have some group brainstorming about how to proceed. You know, to get a broader perspective.”

“Thanks, Jay.”

That was one possibility.

When Jay departed, he was quickly replaced by Cindy at my door.

She waved a paper in her hand and wore a scowl that would drop a buffalo at a hundred paces.

I braced for the storm.

“You promised to talk to her,” she spat as she approached the desk.

“I didn’t get a chance…yet. Send her down.”

She threw the paper at me. “It’s a little late for that.”

The note said Jennifer was quitting, and my stomach clenched. “She can’t just leave.”

“Day late and a dollar short, I’d say.” Cindy turned and left.

I pulled the roll of Tums from my pocket and popped another two in my mouth.

Chapter 38

Dennis

I wason my second scotch when the doorbell rang.

Serena waltzed in with a bag in her arms as I opened the door. “Did you forget about our dinner date already?”

I had, but it wasn’t a good idea to admit weakness with my sister.

I looked at my watch. “I guess I lost track of the time.”

“And started early on the drinking, I see. What’s wrong?”

“What do you mean?”

She wandered toward the kitchen, ignoring me for a moment before she turned. “You look like shit. I’d ask you if your dog died, but you don’t have a dog.”

“Things didn’t go well at work today.”

She started to unpack the grocery bag she’d brought. “I got all the ingredients they listed on a website. I hope I didn’t forget anything. What do we do first?”

I’d completely forgotten that tonight was her cooking lesson. “Preheat the oven to four-fifty to start.”

“How?”

“I don’t believe—”
