“You can keep that. I’ve got another.”

“Let’s keep this under wraps for now. The last thing we need is a Benson in the news as a bank robber.”

“I had to tell Vincent and his wife.”

His eyes narrowed. “Unfortunate. I’ll have a talk with them. Nobody else, though. We have to keep this from getting out.”

“There’s one other problem. I bumped into Adam Cartwright. He’s one of the agents on the case, so we’re not going to get much cooperation.”

Dad sucked in a breath. “That’s not good. Bad apples popping up everywhere. And his father is circling you like the vulture he is.” He stroked his goatee again. “I see why you didn’t want to stay out there.”

Chapter 37

Dennis

After another nightof fitful sleep, I was in the office early Thursday morning.

Cindy was nice enough to bring me a second cup of coffee. “Jay says he needs to talk to you about Cartwright.”

“Okay, send him up.”

“And there’s another thing. You should talk with Jennifer.”

I sat back in my chair and steepled my hands. “And why is that?”

She leaned on the desk. “She needs some cheering up.”

I crossed my arms. “You can handle that. Buy her a donut or something.”

She spun around and went to the door, closed it firmly, and turned toward me. “I think it’s something you need to handle.”

A week ago somebody mentioning I should handle Jennifer would’ve brought pleasant thoughts to mind, but not this morning.

“It’s not my job to keep everybody around here happy. My job is to make sure we can earn enough that everybody keeps getting paid.”

She advanced toward the desk. “I’m not blind, you know. It’s an issue you need to address.” Her implication was clear.

Jennifer and I thought we’d been coy enough that nobody caught on. But nobody didn’t seem to include Cindy.

She sat down in the chair opposite me. “She asked me three times when you’d be back. I can read between the lines. With all she’s done for you, for us, since coming upstairs, don’t you think you owe it to the company to talk to her?”

I didn’t answer.

She crossed her arms. “I can sit here all day until you say yes.”

“Yes.”

“Yes what?”

She was being a real hard ass today.

“Yes, I’ll ask her what’s bothering her. But what’s bothering me right now is that my assistant won’t let me get back to work.”

She rose and headed toward the door. “Yes, boss.” The sarcasm in her voice wasn’t lost on me.

After the door closed behind her, I knew what I wanted to ask Jennifer. The one question that kept coming up:How could you betray us all like that?I’d spent hours and hours on the subject. It ate at me day and night. My stomach was so sour thinking about it, I’d been chewing Tums like they were candy.

I didn’t get any more time to ponder what else to say to Jennifer.
